Job summary

Southern Poverty Law Center is seeking a Senior Staff or Staff Attorney to advance education and youth justice in the Deep South. The role focuses on public education, inclusive democracy, and challenging discriminatory laws and practices affecting Black, Brown, disabled, and LGBTQ+ students.

You will develop cases, mentor staff, build community partnerships, and represent SPLC in courts, legislatures, and agencies while upholding SPLC’s mission and values.

Qualifications

• Experience litigating civil rights matters in federal/state courts.
• Proven ability to work with communities and advocate for youth.
• Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop new cases in consultation with SPLC staff and partners.
• Senior Staff Attorneys will train and mentor legal staff as needed.
• Develop and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
• Investigate, gather information, and interview clients and witnesses.
• Collaborate with ALIT and departments to advance goals.
• Research and write legal memos and briefs on complex issues.
• Represent SPLC before courts, tribunals, and public bodies.
• Respond to requests for legal assistance.
