Job summary

The City of Lawrence is seeking a Senior Staff Accountant to work closely with the Deputy Controller to ensure accurate daily financial reporting and manage receivables/payables, audits, and other financial operations in a City environment. Requires a Bachelor’s or Master’s in accounting or related field and at least four years of experience, with government fund accounting preferred.

This is a full-time, on-site position with competitive benefits and potential for extended hours during budget

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field.
  • Four years or more of related experience required.
  • Experience in Accounts Receivable and Payables highly desirable.
  • Government fund accounting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day accounting operations support, including journal entries, monthly reports and month-end close.
  • Manage Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable processes to ensure timely payments and reconciliations.
  • Assist the Deputy Controller with finances, policies and procedures enforcement.
  • Collaborate with department staff on training, meetings and process improvements.
  • Liaise with other departments to provide financial information.
  • Contribute to annual budgeting and forecasting.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of financial data.
  • Work with external auditors and provide information for annual audit.
  • Support strategic and operational finance tasks and adapt to priorities.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state and federal requirements.

Job description

The Senior Staff Accountant will work closely with the Deputy Controller to ensure daily and accurate financial reporting, manage accounts payable and receivable, conducting audits, and other financial operations. The hourly rate for the position is up to $42/hr ($88,000).

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide support and manage day-to-day accounting operations, including but not limited to journal entries, monthly reports, and month-end close.
  • Perform Accounts Payable and Accountable Receivable functions to ensure timely vendor payments and reconciliations.
  • Assist the Deputy Controller with the finances and accounts of the City, providing financial support by monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Work with Deputy Controller with department staff, training, meetings, and process improvement.
  • Act as liaison with other departments to provide financial information for the departments.
  • Collaborate with producing the annual budget and forecasts.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of financial data by handling confidential information with discretion.
  • Works with external auditors and provides the necessary information for the annual audit.
  • Contribute to other strategic and operational finance tasks within the department, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness to priorities.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.

  • Coordination of Work - Ability to plan and organize a daily work routine and establish priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management.
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk using a computer.
  • Occasional need to travel between locations of city buildings and offices.
  • Interaction with various departments, vendors, and external partners.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field.
  • Four years or more of related experience required.
  • Previous experience in Accounts Receivable and Payables highly desirable
  • Previous experience in government fund accounting preferred
Additional Requirements
  • Requires a background and criminal history check.
  • Attend City Council monthly meetings.
  • Extended daily work hours will be required during budget season and end of year processing.
  • Full-time, civilian, non-exempt position.
