Job summary

Wellfleet, part of the Berkshire Hathaway family, seeks a Senior SQL Engineer to lead design, optimization, and maintenance of critical data systems powering healthcare operations. You will develop databases, optimize performance, and work with cross-functional teams to ensure robust, scalable data infrastructure.

Responsibilities include implementing advanced T-SQL solutions, ETL pipelines with SSIS, and guiding data governance while mentoring junior developers and aligning with IT leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in an information technology role
  • Proven ability with requirement development and strong analytical skills
  • Deep expertise in T-SQL, stored procedures, indexing, and query optimization
  • Strong understanding of the Microsoft tech stack (.NET, Visual Studio)
  • Experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Git) and automated deployments
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite incl. Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, Word and Access
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Healthcare insurance domain experience is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement advanced T-SQL solutions including stored procedures, triggers, views, and indexing strategies
  • Lead performance tuning with query profiling and execution plan analysis
  • Develop and maintain ETL pipelines using SSIS to ingest and transform healthcare data
  • Collaborate with DevOps to enhance CI/CD pipelines for DB deployments
  • Drive data architecture decisions including normalization and partitioning
  • Mentor junior developers and establish SQL development standards
  • Translate business requirements into scalable data solutions
  • Automate and monitor overnight jobs and scheduled processes
  • Manage production environments and triage issues across systems
  • Document data flows and system dependencies
  • Analyze metrics and recommend long-term improvements
  • Support system upgrades and after-hours maintenance
  • Lead demos of new features to IT and business teams
  • Perform other duties as assigned

The Senior SQL Engineer will lead the design, optimization, and maintenance of mission-critical data systems that power our healthcare operations. This includes planning, developing and maintaining company databases while solving performance challenges in a complex environment. This role will also work closely with cross-functional teams, external vendors, and IT leadership to ensure our data infrastructure is robust, scalable, and secure.

In this role, you will…
  • Architect and optimize complex SQL Server databases, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance across high-volume healthcare systems
  • Design and implement advanced T-SQL solutions including stored procedures, triggers, views, and indexing strategies for mission-critical applications
  • Lead performance tuning efforts, including query profiling, execution plan analysis, and database refactoring to reduce latency and improve throughput
  • Develop and maintain robust ETL pipelines using SSIS or custom frameworks to ingest, transform, and deliver healthcare data across systems
  • Collaborate with DevOps to enhance CI/CD pipelines for database deployments, version control, and rollback strategies
  • Drive data architecture decisions, including normalization, partitioning, and schema evolution to support long-term growth and analytics
  • Mentor junior developers, conduct peer code reviews, and establish SQL development standards and best practices
  • Partner with business analysts and stakeholders to translate complex requirements into scalable data solutions
  • Automate and monitor overnight jobs and scheduled processes, ensuring proactive resolution of failures and bottlenecks
  • Manage production environments, triaging issues across web applications, databases, and third-party integrations
  • Document and maintain operational procedures, data flow diagrams, and system dependencies for transparency and continuity
  • Analyze system metrics, identify root causes of performance degradation, and recommend long-term solutions
  • Participate in strategic planning, contributing to data governance, compliance, and security initiatives
  • Support system upgrades and deployments, including early morning or after-hours maintenance windows
  • Lead demos and technical showcases, presenting new features and optimizations to IT and business teams.

We are looking for candidates with…
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and 5+ years of experience in an information technology role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proven ability of requirement development experience with strong analytical and prioritization skills to ensure business expectations and goals are met
  • Deep expertise in T-SQL, stored procedures, indexing, and query optimization
  • Strong understanding of the Microsoft tech stack (.NET, Visual Studio)
  • Experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, Git) and automated deployments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, Word and Access
  • Possess critical thinking skills with proven ability to identify and analyze complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options to implement solutions
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage multiple assignments and prioritize a variety of projects in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, with very little supervisory direction
  • Ability to adapt and pivot and when presented with new information or circumstances
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with both internal team members, cross department business areas and external stakeholders
  • Strong collaborative skills to work effectively with business areas at all levels of the organization
  • 2+ years of experience in healthcare insurance, preferred.
  • Familiarity with ETL tools, data warehousing, and healthcare data standards
  • Experience with LAMP stack, JIRA, and PBM/PPO integrations

The annual gross base salary range is $90,000 to $120,000. This range anticipates the low and high end of the salary for this position. Actual salaries will vary and are based on factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, skills and competencies. Salary is one component of Wellfleet’s total compensation and benefits package, which includes medical, vision and dental insurance options, life and accident insurance, 401(k), and short-term and long-term disability insurance.
