Job description

Are you a certified official with a wealth of knowledge and experience? The Parks and Community Services Department is looking for Senior Sports Officials to support our youth and adult sports programming. Ensure safe and fun play in our sports leagues while mentoring the next generation of referees. DEFINITION

Under direction from the Recreation Coordinator, officiates at sport games including but not limited to: basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer and flag football and performs related duties as required.


EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Explains rules to players
  • Enforces rules and regulations pertaining to facility use, safety and the game
  • Acts as referee at scheduled games
  • Settles disputes following established procedures
  • Takes and enforces disciplinary action when necessary according to established procedures
  • Assists in securing premises
  • Attends meetings and trainings as required
  • Maintains a safe play environment
  • May assist in securing, removing and storing field and sport equipment after the games
  • May work with a partner or alone

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of
  • Sport rules, regulations and officiating techniques and official’s role and duties
  • For softball, knowledge of rules, regulations and umpire techniques of the Amateur Softball Association
Ability to
  • Communicate effectively
  • Make quick and accurate decisions
  • Interact effectively and tactfully with a wide variety of individuals
  • Effectively deal with problems and conflict resolution techniques
  • Concentrate and complete tasks with many distractions
  • Read and understand written instructions; hear and understand verbal instructions
  • Independently initiate and complete work activities
  • Enforce and explain divisional sport rules and policies
  • Respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations
  • Stand and run for long periods of time
  • Work outside and tolerate weather conditions
  • Stay alert and concentrate on game during spectator activity
  • Bend and lift up to 40 lbs

Any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities for Youth and Adult Sports official is:

  • Any combination of training and experience (paid or volunteer) in officiating youth or adult sports events, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. First Aid certificate highly desirable. Applicants must be 18 years or older.

Officials may be placed at Senior Sports Official level when they meet the following criteria:

  • Completed 15 seasons (5 years) with Watsonville Parks and Community Services or have equivalent outside experience as determined by the department or have a combined total of 5 years of internal and external experience.

AND

  • Received satisfactory evaluations in the previous 6 seasons
  • Have no by-law violations in the previous 6 seasons
  • Are willing and able to work all leagues
  • Are willing to work with and instruct rookie officials

Situations That Pay Different than Stated:
  • Working a game alone= a game and a half payment Exception: Coed assignments
  • Coed assignments= an additional $5.00 per game payment
  • Department assigned single game= a double game payment
  • Playoff assignments= a game and half payment

Prior to appointment to the position of SR Sports Official, a medical examination and Department of Justice Livescan fingerprinting will be required.
