Job Description

Job Title: Senior Speech & Language Pathologist

Grade Level/Terms of Employment: Grade 125 /12 Month (260 days)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Work Location: Exceptional Education

Immediate Supervisor: Associate Director, Exceptional Education

General description: The Senior Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) at Richmond Public Schools provides comprehensive speech and language services to students with communication disorders while also serving in a leadership and supervisory capacity. This role involves evaluating, diagnosing, and treating speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders, as well as overseeing and mentoring a team of speech language pathologists across the district.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participates in the recruitment, selection, assignment, and retention of speech language pathologists.
  • Participates in the procurement of speech language pathologist vendors.
  • Supervises division-wide speech-language programs and services in schools and private settings.
  • Facilitates supervisory roles for ASHA’s clinical fellows and university practicum students. Ensures participation of speech-language pathologists in division-wide professional development activities.
  • Convenes speech language pathology staff meetings.
  • Oversees implementation of procedures and supporting documents necessary to comply with federal, state, and division regulations and guidelines.
  • Organizes, presents, and disseminates information regarding current therapy/treatment practices, assessment techniques, forms, procedures, and professional opportunities for speech language pathologists and other staff as appropriate.
  • Facilitates departmental teams for professional development, purchasing, and technology applications.
  • Collaborate with the division's Educational Audiologist to ensure that equipment used for hearing screenings division-wide is available and calibrated for the SLPs' use as required.
  • Evaluates speech language programs and services and provides recommendations as needed.
  • Completes performance evaluations of speech language pathologists consistent with procedures in the Richmond Public Schools Teacher Performance Evaluation System.
  • Completes performance evaluations of vendor speech language pathologists consistent with procedures in the Richmond Public Schools Teacher Performance Evaluation System.
  • Serves as a parent /community liaison and resolves parental concerns.
  • Supervises and provides support for speech-language pathologists’ participation in billing Medicaid.
  • Organizes staff for extended school year services.
  • Collaborates with specialists and school professionals during, before, or after IEP team meetings for which communication skills are an inherent or related component.
  • Participates in continuing education to remain current in all aspects of speech-language pathology and stay abreast of educational issues.
  • Assists the Executive Director in procurement processes related to speech pathology in accordance with Richmond Public Schools’ protocols and internal controls.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited institution.
  • 5 years’ experience delivering speech-language services in a school setting and a Speech Language Pathologist License with the Virginia Department of Health Professions or a valid license by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (BASLP) is required.
  • A Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) (or ability to obtain CCCs within 90 days).
  • Bilingual to include Spanish preferred.
  • The ability to communicate and work in a collaborative and cooperative manner with diverse groups in schools and the community is essential.
  • Must have a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge, skills, and processes of communication, oral and written, as defined in the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and how these are interrelated in forming a sound foundation for the understanding of speech and language acquisition.
  • Must have an understanding of the knowledge, skills, and processes of typical development and the use of speech, language, and hearing.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the basic communication sciences (acoustics; physiological processes of speech, language, and hearing).
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with the principles of remedial procedures and instrumentation in the prevention and rehabilitation of disorders of articulation, language, voice, fluency, auditory processing, and hearing.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the processes of service delivery and instruction, including organization and administration of public school programs to provide services for persons with speech-language disorders, and services available from related fields for those with communication disorders, is essential.
  • Must have an understanding of the knowledge, skills, and processes for educating students with disabilities, the associated legal aspects, and sensitivity to issues of diversity.
