Job summary

The Delaware Department of Justice in Wilmington seeks a Special Investigator in the Administration Division. You will conduct investigations, interview witnesses, gather evidence, prepare reports, and assist Deputy Attorneys General across divisions. The role requires strong communication, the ability to testify, and collaboration with other law enforcement partners.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years of law enforcement experience.
• Ability to investigate complex and difficult cases both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to prepare comprehensive investigative reports for review by a Deputy Attorney General for civil and criminal complaints.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Current or recent POST certification.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), DELJIS, NCIC, and LEISS.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license.
• Ability to qualify to carry a DOJ‑issued firearm.
• Willingness to travel and attend various training opportunities as needed.

Responsibilities

• Conduct investigations, including interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence, and documenting findings.
• Attend court proceedings and testify when appropriate, providing assistance to Deputy Attorneys General on specific prosecutions or investigations.
• Verify claims of alleged or probable violations.
• Examine various records and documents to ascertain relevant information.
• Identify, gather, collect, evaluate, and preserve evidence.
• Make judgments after evaluating all available facts and recommend appropriate action.
• Interpret and apply applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
• Prepare comprehensive and timely investigative reports documenting interviews and other investigative efforts.
• Testify in criminal or civil courts, before a Grand Jury, or during an administrative hearing.
• Conduct surveillance and undercover investigations, as needed.
• Prepare criminal or civil cases for prosecution.
• Work independently or in a team to investigate and prosecute complex cases.
• Maintain professional liaisons and strong lines of communication with other law enforcement partners.
