Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Software Integration Engineer (SWIM) for the Vehicle Motion Embedded Control (VMEC) organization. You will plan, lead and execute software content and timing for release swimlanes in HYBRID propulsion controllers and chair the SWET with internal and supplier partners to ensure on-time, high-quality delivery.

You will direct engineering support personnel, drive software builds and testing, maintain SW ADV plans, and mentor team members while continuously improving

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in mechanical/electrical engineering or computer science or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in real-time embedded software systems.
  • Proven technical project leadership or project management experience.
  • Hands-on experience with real-time control software in C/C++/JAVA/Assembly and scripting (Python/Perl).
  • Understanding of Unix/Linux/RTOS and instrumentation (INCA, dSpace).
  • Familiarity with configuration management (Git) and build tools (Jenkins, Jira, eFlow).
  • Drive for results and teamwork in project execution; strong analytical ability.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of software content and timing for releases.
  • Document and communicate software delivery plans to internal and external teams.
  • Lead software verification/validation plans and maintain SW ADV documentation.
  • Obtain plan approvals from leadership and set priorities for builds, testing, and validation.
  • Ensure C-PoE tasks are completed per program timing; escalate issues as needed.
  • Manage controller resources (memory/CPU) and engage SMEs for resolution.
  • Foster best practices to ensure high quality work and reduce lead time.
  • Train, mentor, and develop technical capability of team members.

Job description

Work Arrangement: Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, Michigan three times per week, at minimum, and is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week. This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.

The Role: We are looking for a Software Integration Engineer (aka SWIM) to join our Vehicle Motion Embedded Control (VMEC) organization! The SWIM is a technical project leadership position where you will be responsible to plan, lead and execute software build content and timing for assigned software swimlane(s) for Hybrid Electric Vehicle propulsion controllers. In addition, you would chair the Software Execution Team Meeting (SWET) with key partners to ensure all requirements and work are met on-time with "world's best" quality. Lastly, you will exercise technical direction over engineering support personnel both internally (GM) and externally (supplier) assigned to a given swimlane(s).

What You'll Do:
  • Lead the development of software content and timing for assigned releases on new or very active controllers
  • Document the information in the software delivery plan and communicate those plans to internal and external organizations
  • Lead project specific software verification and validation plans and document the information in software Analysis, Development and Validation (SW ADV) plan.
  • Acquire approval of each plan from appropriate leadership
  • Provide direction and set priorities for software builds, testing, and validation
  • Ensure the Controls Process of Engineering (C-PoE) tasks are completed per program timing
  • Drive resolution of issues and obstacles and escalate as required
  • Actively manage controller resources (e.g., memory and CPU utilization) at each software release; engage SMEs for resolution as required
  • Foster & document best practices to ensure high quality work and reduce development lead time
  • Train, develop, mentor, and evaluate technical capability of team members
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in real-time embedded software system
  • Demonstrated technical project lead or project management experience
  • Direct hands-on experience in developing real-time controls software with programming (e.g., C/C++/JAVA/Assembly) and scripting languages (e.g., Perl/Python)
  • Understanding of operating systems (e.g., Unix, Linux, RTOS for embedded system) and instrumentation (e.g., INCA, in circuit emulators, dSpace)
  • Familiarity with configuration management systems (e.g., GiT) and build tools (e.g., Jenkins, Jira, eflow)
  • Demonstrated drive for results and teamwork in project execution
  • Demonstrated analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
  • Master’s degree in one of the following: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of experience in real-time embedded software system
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines
  • Certification in Agile specific roles
  • Familiarity with configuration management system and build tools
  • Production experience with automotive control systems specifically in propulsion
  • Knowledge of vehicle electrical architectures and communication networks
  • DFSS Black‑Belt certification
