Job description

At Williams, we’re powering a cleaner, more connected future, and that starts with you. Here, your work fuels communities, drives innovation, and helps deliver reliable energy the world depends on.

Join a Fortune 500 team that invests in your growth, values your contributions, and challenges you to make a lasting impact every day. Do something that means something at Williams.

This isn’t just a job - it’s an opportunity to explore and discover your passion with coworkers who become friends and mentors who push you to be your best self in and out of the office.

At Williams, we make clean energy happen. And you can too, so bring your energy to ours!

As a Sr Software Engineering Manager, you will build and lead the team behind the software our business runs on. You'll partner directly with operations, engineering and commercial leaders to turn business problems into solutions people actually use – and you'll set the bar for how your team designs, ships and supports them. You'll have access to modern AI tools and the latitude to build custom agentic solutions that balance creativity with sound engineering. Beyond the technical, you'll grow careers, shape the roadmap, and steward the investment in tools, vendors and talent that makes it all possible. This role reports to the Director of IT Operations & Maintenance Solutions with visibility across senior leadership.

Responsibilities/Expectations
  • Lead & Develop the Team: Set clear goals, provide the resources and training your team needs, and deliver candid performance feedback that helps engineers grow. Build a culture where people do their best work and want to stay.
  • Technical Direction & Solution Delivery: Establish the feasibility, approach and architecture for solutions addressing newly identified business needs. Drive delivery from concept through production with minimal guidance, holding the team to high standards for quality, security and supportability.
  • Modern Engineering Practice: Champion the adoption of AI-assisted development and agentic tooling across the team. Evaluate emerging technologies with clear eyes, pilot what shows promise, and scale what works – pairing creative approaches with sound engineering judgment.
  • Business Partnership: Work directly with business sponsors and functional leaders to understand operational challenges and translate them into practical technical solutions. Serve as the primary technical point of contact for the portfolios your team supports.
  • Financial & Vendor Stewardship: Own departmental expenditures, capital investments and contractor spend. Manage vendor and partner relationships to ensure the organization gets real value from every dollar invested in tools, platforms and talent.
  • Process & Continuous Improvement: Assess current engineering and support processes to identify friction and inefficiency. Design and implement better ways of working, and recognize when a different approach beats an incremental one.
  • Standards & Governance: Provide input to policy-level direction on technical standards, architecture decisions and budget constraints. Advise on priorities, methods and technical problem-solving across the broader IT organization.
  • Executive Communication: Translate technical work, delivery progress and investment decisions into clear, actionable updates for senior leadership. Facilitate the conversations that keep technology direction aligned with business strategy.
Education/Years of Experience

Required: Bachelor's degree and minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in IT, including a minimum of two (2) years in a formal or informal leadership role.

Preferred: Bachelor's degree in an IT-related field.

Other Requirements
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational/interpersonal skills and safety as the utmost priority.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications and PC skills.
  • Exemplary vendor management skills.
  • Strong knowledge of technology trends and ability to translate those trends into effective business applications.
  • Experience partnering with leaders across IT and business to deliver a technology roadmap.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects and responsibilities.

Preferred: Knowledge in implementation or support of cloud/SaaS applications.

Preferred: Experience in the energy or utility industries.

Preferred: Understanding of current and future state strategies for automation technology.
