Job description

We are partnering with an established, technology-driven organization that operates high-volume digital platforms supporting customers, business partners, and internal operations across a regulated industry.

The company is investing heavily in modernizing its technology ecosystem and moving toward an AI-enabled engineering culture. As part of that transformation, they are hiring a Senior Manager of Software Engineering to lead a customer-facing digital platform and the engineering team responsible for it.

This is a hands-on engineering leadership role for someone who can improve an existing production platform while simultaneously helping define what its next generation should look like.

You will inherit an established team and application, take ownership of engineering execution and platform health, and help prepare for a significant future modernization effort.

What You'll Own
Engineering Leadership
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team responsible for a business-critical customer-facing application.
  • Establish a culture of ownership, accountability, technical curiosity, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop engineers through regular coaching, performance management, career planning, and stretch opportunities.
  • Identify and develop emerging technical and engineering leaders within the organization.
  • Create an environment where engineers are expected to think independently, challenge assumptions, and make thoughtful technical decisions.
Platform & Technical Direction
  • Own the stability, quality, performance, and ongoing evolution of a modern full-stack application.
  • Provide technical leadership across an Angular/Node.js front end and Java/Spring Boot backend.
  • Guide architecture and design decisions while remaining credible in technical discussions and code reviews.
  • Work closely with architecture, security, infrastructure, and shared-services teams.
  • Balance continued investment in the existing platform with architecture and planning for a potential next-generation rebuild.
  • Evaluate technical trade-offs and clearly communicate recommendations to engineering leadership and business stakeholders.
AI-Enabled Engineering
  • Help establish an AI-forward engineering culture within the team.
  • Identify opportunities to incorporate LLMs, conversational experiences, intelligent workflow automation, and guided digital experiences into the product.
  • Integrate approved AI development tools into everyday engineering workflows to improve developer productivity, code quality, testing, and operational efficiency.
  • Establish appropriate controls around production AI capabilities, including security, reliability, quality, and responsible-use considerations.
  • Help determine where AI creates meaningful customer or operational value versus where traditional software approaches remain more appropriate.
Product & Business Partnership
  • Partner with product, operations, and business teams to translate complex workflows into intuitive digital experiences.
  • Work effectively in an environment where technology must satisfy security, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Connect engineering priorities to measurable customer and business outcomes.
  • Communicate technical strategy, delivery progress, risks, dependencies, and trade-offs to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
Delivery & Operational Excellence
  • Improve engineering predictability, release discipline, and overall delivery performance.
  • Establish strong practices around automated testing, code quality, CI/CD, observability, incident management, and production support.
  • Define and track engineering and platform-health metrics that provide meaningful visibility into team performance.
  • Build a proactive reliability culture focused on preventing incidents rather than repeatedly reacting to them.
  • Establish effective runbooks, post-incident reviews, root-cause analysis, and continuous-improvement practices.
  • Identify and remove technical and organizational obstacles that limit engineering velocity.
What We're Looking For
Experience
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • 3+ years of engineering management, people leadership, or comparable technical leadership experience.
  • Experience leading teams responsible for production, customer-facing digital applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve an established platform while helping plan or architect significant modernization initiatives.
  • Experience owning technology where reliability, usability, and performance have a direct impact on customer experience and business results.
Technical Background

Strong working knowledge of:

  • Angular
  • Node.js
  • AWS
  • RESTful APIs and/or microservices
  • CI/CD and modern DevOps/DevSecOps practices
  • Automated testing and code-quality practices
  • Production monitoring and observability

You should be technically credible enough to participate meaningfully in architecture discussions, challenge technical assumptions, evaluate design decisions, and review code when appropriate.

Experience building responsive applications across mobile and desktop environments is important, including familiarity with performance optimization and modern web application architecture.

AI Experience

This is an important part of the position.

Candidates should have practical experience with:

  • Integrating LLMs, conversational AI, chatbots, or intelligent workflows into software products.
  • Using modern AI-assisted software development tools such as Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or comparable platforms.
  • Applying AI to improve engineering productivity rather than treating it solely as a customer-facing feature.
  • Evaluating AI capabilities for production readiness, security, reliability, and quality.
Leadership

We're looking for an engineering leader who can:

  • Build and retain strong engineering teams.
  • Coach engineers while maintaining high technical standards.
  • Create accountability without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Communicate effectively with executives, engineers, product leaders, and operational stakeholders.
  • Make decisions with incomplete information and clearly explain technical trade-offs.
  • Operate effectively in Agile/product-oriented development environments.
  • Balance delivery speed with platform reliability and long-term engineering health.
Nice to Have

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be valuable but is not required:

  • Regulated industries or complex transaction/workflow platforms
  • Customer self-service applications
  • Progressive Web Applications (PWAs)
  • Accessibility standards such as WCAG
  • Event-driven architectures
  • Kafka, SNS/SQS, EventBridge, or similar technologies
  • Datadog, Splunk, or comparable observability platforms
  • Large-scale platform modernization or greenfield application development
Why This Role

This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership of an established digital product while helping shape its next generation.

The role combines people leadership, full-stack technical depth, platform modernization, customer experience, and applied AI with enough scope to make a measurable impact on both the technology and the engineering culture.
