Position Summary
Location: Onsite, Springville, Utah (potential for some hybrid work)
Employment Type: Full-Time
Experience Level: Senior
Rustica is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to serve as a hands‑on Technical Lead for our customer‑facing e‑commerce platform and the systems connecting our customers, employees, business operations, and manufacturing environment.
This is a senior individual‑contributor role with technical leadership responsibilities. You will own architecture, engineering quality, and production reliability while remaining actively involved in development.
The primary focus is Rustica’s revenue‑critical e‑commerce platform, including product configuration, pricing, cart, checkout, payments, customer accounts, and order processing. You will also contribute to internal commerce administration and manufacturing systems used to manage production workflows, employee activity, time tracking, reporting, and other business operations.
You will also help own the AWS and Cloudflare infrastructure supporting these applications, including deployments, security, monitoring, backups, recovery, and production incident response.
This is not simply a feature‑development role. We need an experienced engineer who can evaluate existing and rapidly developed code, identify architectural and security risks, and build production‑quality systems that protect data integrity and business continuity.
AI‑assisted development tools may be used, but the engineer remains responsible for validating architecture, correctness, security, performance, maintainability, and production readiness.
Key Responsibilities
E-Commerce & Customer Systems
- Develop and improve Rustica’s customer‑facing e‑commerce storefront.
- Support complex configurable products, pricing, discounts, lead times, parts, and bills of materials.
- Own critical workflows including cart, checkout, payments, customer accounts, and order creation.
- Maintain integrations with payment processors, tax providers, authentication, email, analytics, and other third‑party services.
- Protect against duplicate payments, fraudulent activity, repeated submissions, and inconsistent order states.
- Improve performance, accessibility, mobile usability, SEO, reliability, and customer experience.
- Diagnose and resolve production issues affecting customers, payments, pricing, and orders.
Architecture & Backend
- Design secure APIs connecting storefront, administrative, manufacturing, and third‑party systems.
- Design and maintain PostgreSQL schemas, migrations, queries, indexes, constraints, and transactional workflows.
- Build systems that remain reliable during concurrent requests, retries, partial failures, duplicate events, and third‑party outages.
- Develop reliable background jobs, queues, scheduled processes, and recovery workflows.
- Establish automated testing around revenue‑critical and operationally critical systems.
- Review code for correctness, security, maintainability, and architectural alignment.
Internal Commerce & Manufacturing Systems
- Improve tools used to manage products, pricing, orders, customers, promotions, and operational settings.
- Build safe, intuitive tools for non‑technical employees.
- Integrate commerce data with ERP, manufacturing, marketing, shipping, accounting, and reporting systems.
- Help architect Rustica’s manufacturing and operations platform.
- Build systems supporting production workflows, employee activity, time tracking, material usage, exceptions, and operational reporting.
- Support integrations with CAD, SolidWorks, printing systems, shop‑floor equipment, and related manufacturing technology as needed.
- Help determine when Rustica should build internal capabilities versus integrating established third‑party systems.
AWS, Cloudflare & Production Infrastructure
- Administer and improve AWS‑hosted applications and supporting cloud services.
- Work with services such as Amplify, Lambda, EventBridge, IAM, Secrets Manager, SQS, SNS, CloudWatch, and Lightsail.
- Maintain repeatable deployments and infrastructure‑as‑code using tools such as AWS SAM, CloudFormation, and GitHub Actions.
- Manage Cloudflare DNS, CDN, caching, TLS, redirects, WAF, bot protection, and Turnstile.
- Maintain CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, logging, alerts, backups, restore procedures, and disaster‑recovery plans.
- Participate in production incident response and root‑cause analysis.Ensure production systems are documented, secure, observable, recoverable, and maintainable.
Technical Leadership
- Translate business and operational needs into appropriate technical solutions.
- Evaluate projects based on business value, technical risk, complexity, and long‑term maintenance.
- Lead architecture reviews and establish practical engineering standards.
- Provide technical direction and code review to employees, contractors, and other developers.
- Communicate technical risks and architectural decisions clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Own projects from discovery and design through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing support.
- Make informed build‑versus‑buy decisions.
- Leave systems more understandable, testable, and supportable than you found them.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years owning architecture, production reliability, or technical direction for business‑critical systems.
- Experience owning a revenue‑critical e‑commerce platform or comparable transactional system involving payments, orders, billing, or financial workflows.
- Advanced JavaScript and TypeScript skills.
- Strong experience with Vue, Nuxt, or a comparable modern frontend framework.
- Strong Node.js and HTTP API development experience.
- Strong PostgreSQL and relational data‑modeling experience.
- Experience with transactions, migrations, indexing, constraints, query analysis, and data‑integrity protections.
- Ability to design reliable systems that handle concurrency, retries, partial failures, and duplicate requests.
- Hands‑on AWS experience involving hosting, IAM, secrets, monitoring, scheduled workloads, and production troubleshooting.
- Experience with Cloudflare or comparable DNS, CDN, WAF, and edge‑security infrastructure.
- Experience with Linux, Git, CI/CD, and repeatable production deployments.
- Strong application‑security fundamentals, including authentication, authorization, validation, rate limiting, audit logging, secrets management, and secure API design.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose complex production issues and distinguish a functional prototype from production‑ready architecture.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and independent decision‑making skills.
Preferred Experience
Experience in any of the following is a plus:
E-commerce checkout and payment systems; fraud prevention; complex product configurators or CPQ; BOM generation; NetSuite or other ERP integrations; manufacturing software; AWS SAM/CloudFormation; GitHub Actions/OIDC; Sentry; Firebase Authentication; Postmark; Avalara; C#/.NET; Android; SolidWorks/CAD automation; backup architecture; disaster recovery; security review; or incident leadership.
You are not expected to know every technology Rustica uses. Depth in software architecture, production engineering, and problem‑solving is more important than checking every technical box.
What Success Looks Like
- You will help keep Rustica’s storefront, checkout, payments, and order workflows secure and dependable; improve the reliability and maintainability of existing software; identify architectural risks before they become production failures; strengthen integrations between commerce, ERP, and manufacturing systems; and ensure rapidly developed software is properly reviewed, tested, and hardened before becoming business‑critical.
