Senior Software Engineer – Real-Time Energy Microgrids

Job summary

Scale seeks a full-stack software engineer to build software for managing microgrids and distributed energy resources. You will report to the Director of Software Engineering and work from our New York City office (Union Square).

You will design and deliver front-end UIs and high-performance backend services, plus optimization models and data pipelines that operate at scale. The role combines software development with energy domain modeling to enable real-time decisions and portfolio analysis.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS, EE, or related field.
• 5+ years of Python and JavaScript/TypeScript development.
• Energy domain experience and modeling/optimization.
• Experience with convex/constraint-based optimization problems and Bayesian modelling.
• Familiarity with Pyomo and solvers (HiGHS, Gurobi, GLPK).
• FastAPI and microservices experience.
• React for front-end development and PostgreSQL design.
• Experience with high-volume time-series data and IoT protocols (MQTT, Sparkplug B).

Responsibilities

• Front-end development: build web UIs for operators and customers.
• Architect and maintain high-performance backend services and APIs.
• Develop and enhance financial modeling features and data integrations.
• Design optimization models (MILP/LP) and solver integration.
• Build simulation infrastructure and validate optimization outputs.
• Design and maintain IoT data ingestion and pipelines.
