Job summary

Walmart is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the delivery of scalable, secure software solutions across collaborative teams. You will manage feature development, testing, and ongoing support with emphasis on CI/CD, automation, and AI/ML integration to enhance platform capabilities.

The role requires proficiency in Scala, Python, PySpark, and Java to build distributed data pipelines on Spark and deploy on GCP. You will monitor performance and ensure reliability across global markets.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related field and 3 years' software engineering experience, or 5 years' experience without degree.
  • Proficiency in Scala, Python, PySpark, and Java with distributed data pipelines experience.
  • Experience with CI/CD, testing, and code reviews; ability to work in multi-tenant, multi-market environments.
  • Familiarity with GCP Dataproc, Airflow, Kafka, Cassandra, and cost/performance optimization.

Responsibilities

  • Own delivery of scoped features and models with engineering teams.
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain data pipelines and platform services on Spark/GCP.
  • Integrate AI/ML components to enhance software capabilities.
  • Participate in design reviews and apply scalable software design principles.
  • Conduct code reviews, debugging, and CI to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Monitor performance with Grafana/Open Observe and support reliability improvements across markets.

Position Summary...What you'll do...Role summary: As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead the delivery of scalable, secure software solutions by managing feature development, testing, and ongoing support within collaborative teams. This role requires expertise in multiple programming languages and a strong focus on continuous integration, automation, and AI/ML integration to enhance platform capabilities. You will contribute to technical design, code quality, and operational excellence while mentoring peers and driving innovation. Your work will align with broader business objectives, ensuring reliable, high-performance systems that meet evolving customer and stakeholder needs.

About the team: The Search and Personalization team at Walmart focuses on understanding customer needs to create seamless, efficient shopping experiences across online and in-store channels. The team develops intelligent, personalized solutions by leveraging advanced machine learning, natural language processing, and knowledge representation. Comprising skilled engineers, data scientists, and product experts, the team addresses complex challenges at the intersection of Walmart’s extensive assortment, millions of customers, and thousands of stores. Their work drives innovation in e-commerce by delivering tailored experiences that enhance customer engagement and satisfaction globally.

What you'll do:
  • Own delivery of scoped features and models through collaborative engineering teams, ensuring alignment with platform and system objectives.
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain data pipelines and platform services using Scala, Spark, Python, and PySpark on GCP Dataproc, following clean coding and documentation standards.
  • Integrate AI and machine learning components to enhance software capabilities and innovation.
  • Participate in design reviews, applying scalable and maintainable software design principles.
  • Conduct code reviews, debugging, and continuous integration to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Monitor application performance using Grafana, Open Observe, and platform telemetry; support ongoing reliability improvements including autoscaling optimization, cost efficiency, and SLA compliance across 9 global markets.
What you'll bring:
  • Extensive experience in software development with proficiency in Scala, Python, PySpark, and Java, with hands‑on experience building distributed data pipelines on Apache Spark.
  • Strong expertise in object‑oriented and functional programming, code review, debugging, and documentation‑based coding practices.
  • Proven ability to deliver scoped features and platform components through iterative development and continuous integration in a multi‑tenant, multi‑market environment.
  • Experience with big data ecosystems - GCP Dataproc, Airflow, Kafka, Cassandra, GCS, and columnar formats and optimizing for throughput, latency, and cost.
  • Experience with Kubernetes/WCNP deployments, CI/CD, and infrastructure‑as‑code practices.
  • Effective collaboration and communication skills to engage cross‑functional teams - data science, ML engineering, product, and platform stakeholders.

Live Better U is a Walmart‑paid education benefit program for full‑time and part‑time associates in Walmart and Sam's Club facilities. Programs range from high school completion to bachelors degrees, including English Language Learning and short‑form certificates. Tuition, books, and fees are completely paid for by Walmart.

The annual salary range for this position is $117,000.00 - $234,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :

Minimum Qualifications
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.

Preferred Qualifications
