Position Summary
GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, fostering a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.
Position Description
Our Engineers work with Sr Staff Engineers to innovate, build new systems, improve existing systems, and identify new opportunities to apply your knowledge to solve critical problems. You will lead strategy and execution of a technical roadmap to increase product delivery velocity and unlock new engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in the Open-Source Observability and Data platform domains.
Position Responsibilities
- Provide technical and thought leadership across multiple areas of the enterprise
- Collaborate with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve complex problems
- Develop and execute technical strategies for the Observability Engineering domain
- Ensure quality, usability, and performance of solutions
- Mentor and coach engineering and product teams; influence and educate executives
- Share best practices and improve processes across teams
- Analyze costs, forecast, and incorporate into business plans
- Assess resource requirements, evaluate operational processes, measure outcomes, and support continuous learning
- Willingness to participate in on-call and operational support
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience in building complex distributed systems processing large-scale telemetry, with knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes
- Proficiency in at least one OOP language such as Java, Go, or Python
- Understanding of open-source databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL databases such as Clickhouse, Cassandra, Apache Trino; familiarity with big data formats like Parquet or Avro
- Experience architecting and designing Observability platform solutions and data analytics using open-source technologies
- Experience building distributed systems
- Excellent communication skills, with ability to lead projects and interact with clients and stakeholders
- Experience with CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and transferring research into production
- Strong knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms
- Analytical problem-solving skills with quantitative approaches
- Experience with Windows Server Administration and Windows Event Log
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, startup-like environment
- Willingness to work in both development and operational environments
- Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development lifecycle
- Experience with big data and streaming data architectures (Lambda/Kappa) and Kubernetes clusters
- Experience with open-source tools like GIT, Jenkins, CircleCI, Terraform, Ansible is a plus
- Knowledge of ML and AI technologies
- Experience with open-source monitoring tools like Grafana and Prometheus
Experience
- 3+ years in software development, platform architecture, administration, governance, infrastructure management, and maintenance
- 3+ years working with open-source frameworks
- 1+ years in architecture and design
- 3+ years experience with cloud providers like AWS, GCP, Azure, or hybrid data centers
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience
Salary Range
$90,000 - $215,000 annually. Final salary depends on experience, education, location, and market factors. GEICO does not sponsor employment authorization for this position at this time.
