Overview
Talon Defense seeks a Senior Software Engineer – Modeling & Simulation to develop, extend, and integrate software capabilities across mission-focused modeling and simulation efforts. As part of a multidisciplinary team of software engineers, systems engineers, analysts, and subject matter experts, this role will build solutions that improve simulation capabilities and streamline analytical workflows. The ideal candidate brings strong software engineering fundamentals, enjoys solving complex technical problems, and is comfortable working across technologies and learning new tools. Our modeling and simulation work frequently uses AFSIM (Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling), but prior AFSIM experience is not required. Engineers with experience in other modeling and simulation environments are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain software supporting modeling, simulation, and analysis
- Extend existing models and simulation frameworks through new functionality, plug-ins, and integrations
- Integrate external applications, data sources, models, and algorithms into modeling and simulation environments
- Automate simulation configuration, execution, data processing, and analysis workflows
- Develop services, APIs, interfaces, and user-facing tools that help analysts configure and evaluate simulations
- Work with engineers, analysts, and subject matter experts to translate mission needs into software requirements and technical tasks
- Contribute to code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD processes, and technical documentation
- Troubleshoot complex software issues and adapt solutions as project requirements evolve
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline, with 5+ years of relevant industry experience; relevant experience, applicable training, and/or certifications may be substituted for the bachelor's degree
- Strong software development experience in one or more of C++, Java, Python, or C#, with particular interest in candidates with strong C++ or Java backgrounds
- Understanding of scenario development, platform and system modeling, sensors, communications, tracking, or simulation analysis
- Experience developing simulation extensions or integrating external models, data sources, and algorithms
- Experience designing, developing, testing, debugging, and maintaining production-quality software
- Experience working across software components such as back-end services, application logic, APIs, data processing, or user interfaces
- Ability to understand existing architectures and extend or integrate functionality within complex systems
- Experience with Git-based development workflows and CI/CD tools such as GitLab
- Experience working in an Agile or iterative development environment
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to learn new tools and technical domains
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary technical team
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical discipline
- Experience with AFSIM, including scripting, model integration, plug-in development, or extending simulation capabilities
- Experience with NGTS, Cameo, or other modeling and simulation tools and frameworks
- Experience with full-stack development or user-facing analytical and simulation applications
- Experience with Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, or containerized development environments
- Experience developing and deploying software within classified DoD systems and networks
- Experience automating scalable simulation or data-processing pipelines and applying optimization or computational modeling techniques
- Familiarity with data science and machine learning tools such as Jupyter, PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, or Apache Spark
- Experience with geospatial technologies such as ArcGIS, GeoPandas, Shapely, PostGIS, or GeoServer
Compensation
$150,000 - $170,000 per year

Salary offered will depend on numerous qualifying factors such as clearance, degree and the years and depth of applicable experience.
