Job summary

DigitalOcean is seeking a Senior Software Engineer II to join the Managed Databases (DBaaS) engineering team. You will design and build scalable DBaaS platform components, bridging product requirements with concrete architecture, and lead cross-team projects across DBaaS and adjacent platform areas.

You will mentor engineers, own performance and reliability in production, and help raise engineering standards while operating what you build in a hybrid, Seattle-based role.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems or data-plane/control-plane infrastructure.
• Production depth: proven ability to diagnose and solve complex, high-concurrency engineering problems in production cloud environments.
• Database platform fluency: working knowledge of PostgreSQL and/or MySQL, including query performance, replication, and scale.
• Distributed systems mastery: strong understanding of concurrency, failure modes, multi-region concerns, and performance optimization in production Linux/cloud environments.
• Scale for data & AI workloads: experience scaling services for compute, memory, and networking demands of data-intensive or AI inference-adjacent workloads.
• Collaboration & mentorship: track record of driving complex cross-team technical projects and mentoring engineers.
• Growth mindset: willingness to improve architecture and maintainability continuously.

Responsibilities

• Architect and implement DBaaS platform systems: design scalable control-plane and infrastructure components for improved throughput, multi-region operability, and reliability.
• Turn ambiguous requirements into deliverable architecture with clear designs and workstreams.
• Own performance and resiliency: improve resource utilization, fault tolerance, and availability under production load.
• Strengthen lifecycle capabilities: ship automated failover, backups, PITR, and maintenance workflows for higher data volumes and tighter SLAs.
• Scale for data-heavy and AI-adjacent demand: harden control-plane and infrastructure for high-concurrency workloads.
• Raise the team engineering bar: guide technical decisions through design reviews and write clear design docs.
• Mentor team members: provide technical guidance and code-quality standards to accelerate growth.
• Operate what you build: establish observability, failover, recovery, and on-call practices.
