Senior Software Engineer, Developer Experience (Remote)

We are on a journey to help the next million creators, publishers, and companies scale and monetize their audiences. beehiiv is already home to tens of thousands of the most popular newsletters in the world, and we're only 3 years old! The company quickly achieved $1M ARR in January 2023, over $7M just a year later in January 2024, and on pace for $15M to end 2025.

Our team is composed of some of the most talented and ambitious engineers in the industry. beehiiv currently sends over 2 billion emails per month and aims to build a world-class email platform. As our engineering team approaches 30 members, we're looking for someone focused on maximizing engineering productivity by improving developer tooling, testing, and monitoring, enabling rapid feature development, problem detection, and bug fixing.

You will be a great fit if you have a well-thought-out technical perspective, experience working on developer tools used by engineering teams, and experience building and maintaining complex, high-traffic Rails applications.

Our Tech Stack

• An API-only Rails application with subscriber/newsletter data stored in Postgres, deployed on Heroku with plans to migrate to AWS.
• Full-stack Remix applications powering subscriber-facing websites, written in TypeScript.
• A Kafka/EKS/Clickhouse data ingestion platform for processing over 10 billion events, written in Golang.
• Sentry.io for exception handling and NewRelic for APM and logs.
• An extensive RSpec test suite that runs in less than 5 minutes.

Ideal Candidate

• Systems thinker with effective communication skills.
• Experience with architectural design and delivering solutions through code.
• Proficiency with Rails, Ruby, and developer tooling for growing teams.
• Experience with AI assistants for development.
• Knowledge of asynchronous processing with Sidekiq and Kafka.
• A proven track record of enhancing developer productivity through tooling and infrastructure improvements.

Nice to Have

• Experience with frontend tooling like Vite, Biome, and TypeScript.
• Experience with Heroku, Sentry, GitHub.
• Familiarity with email-specific topics.
• Experience in small, highly productive engineering teams.
• Experience with Clickhouse or other OLAP databases.

Responsibilities

• Reduce discrepancies between development/staging and production environments.
• Develop 'review app' functionality for disposable testing environments.
• Generate realistic seed data for performance testing.
• Enhance production observability and monitoring.
• Minimize errors and discrepancies in local development, such as database drift and missing dependencies.
• Identify and drive improvements to increase development efficiency using AI technologies and best practices.
• Collaborate with engineers to address local development pain points.
• Maintain and monitor the health of development and production environments.
