Job summary

Defense Unicorns, a remote‑first tech company in the United States, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the UDS Foundations Team. You’ll lead design and implementation of features, mentor teammates, and coordinate with product managers to deliver secure, scalable software for mission‑critical systems.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years in software engineering, strong Golang and/or TypeScript skills, and experience with Kubernetes, Terraform/OpenTofu, and cloud architecture (AWS/Azure).

Qualifications

• 5+ years (Senior) software engineering experience.
• Experience using Git and GitHub in collaborative environments.
• Experience building and operating software products.
• Proficiency in Golang and/or TypeScript.
• Infrastructure as code with OpenTofu or Terraform.
• Strong system design, APIs, databases, and cloud architecture (AWS/Azure).
• Ability to assess complex problems and drive to completion.
• Experience with Kubernetes Operators, OpenTofu providers is a plus.
• Familiar with Core Kubernetes concepts (Controllers/Operators/CRDs).
• Open Source collaboration is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with engineers and open source communities on feature and bug fix requests.
• Identify and resolve ambiguities in product requirements.
• Work in a fully remote team environment.
• Participate in communities of practice via Slack and Github Issues.
• Integrate software with defense systems ensuring security and interoperability.
• Own architecture decisions and ensure technical quality.
• Develop documentation including design specs and user/maintenance guides.
• Stay current with emerging tech to inform product enhancements.
• Provide technical mentorship and elevate engineering standards.
• Participate in 24x7 on-call rotation for incident response.
