Job summary

Granica is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build foundational lakehouse systems for AI. You will own core systems behind Crunch, focusing on metadata, transactions, and storage layouts for petabyte- to exabyte-scale data.

You’ll work on end-to-end design of table maintenance, time travel, and cost/performance optimizations across Spark, Trino, Presto, Flink, and more. This role is hands-on and highly impactful.

Qualifications

• Strong engineering depth in distributed systems, storage systems, databases, or data infrastructure.
• Production experience with data lake/lakehouse technologies (Iceberg, Delta Lake, Hudi, Spark, Trino/Presto, Flink).
• Hands-on experience with columnar formats such as Parquet or ORC.

Responsibilities

• Build metadata and transaction systems for large‑scale tabular datasets.
• Design systems with time travel, schema evolution, partition evolution, and snapshot isolation.
• Develop table maintenance infrastructure for lakehouse formats (Iceberg, Delta Lake, Hudi).
• Build systems for manifests, snapshots, transaction logs, metadata pruning, and table garbage collection.
• Optimize file layout, clustering, compaction, file sizing, and read-path performance.
• Improve performance and cost efficiency across object-store environments (S3, GCS, ADLS).
• Work with columnar formats like Parquet and ORC, including encoding and compression.
• Contribute to lakehouse systems across engines (Spark, Flink, Trino, Presto, Databricks, Snowflake).
