Job description

Job Purpose:

As Senior Engineer, your role is to develop and maintain robust, scalable, and secure software for all of Rappel's systems, including core data pipelines, customer portals, and cloud infrastructure. We are launching a major expansion of our platform this fall, and this role will play a pivotal role in the build. The ideal candidate is drawn to analytical software, has a real eye for detail and stability, and thinks three steps ahead to anticipate what the product will need next.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with a small team to help plan, develop and test complex business software as it transforms from an internal-facing tool to a complex platform offering.
  • Work directly with Product and Delivery to turn what customers actually need into shipped features, and keep delivery seamless as new capability lands.
  • Develop domain expertise across Rappel's technical stack and business context, including familiarity with carbon and economic modeling principles.
  • Help define and maintain the long-term technical architecture, guiding system scalability and reliability, managing system versioning, deployment processes and drawing down technical debt.
  • Manage development cycles to ensure technical decisions align with business priorities and timelines.
  • Model technical excellence and best practices while fostering an inclusive, collaborate team culture.
  • Develop and encourage data engineering best practices to improve system efficiency and leverage new technologies in AI and cloud environments.
  • Recommend improvements to product design and strategy, ensuring robustness, scalability, and maintainability across the stack.
  • Stay abreast of external trends and new functionality released by third party/cloud solutions, identifying and socializing opportunities for expanded business applicability.
Desired Experience:
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in computer engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • 5-7 years of full-time software engineering experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Python is a must.
  • Proficiency with back-end technologies and runtime environments such as Python or Node.js.
  • Proficiency building and deploying APIs (REST/GraphQL).
  • Strong proficiency with cloud computing platforms (any of the big three Azure, AWS, GCP) and container technologies (Docker) including deployment and management best practices
  • Proficiency with PostgreSQL.
  • Experience in front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS/Tailwind, JavaScript/TypeScript and popular frameworks like React.
  • Expertise with Git and GitHub.
  • Track record displaying increasing ownership over technical architecture and/or system design.
  • Track record of leading technical initiatives and mentoring other engineers.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Exposure to incorporating LLMs and other agentic tools into cloud native systems to enhance analytics and data processing
Nice to Have:
  • Prior roles or familiarity with energy or carbon systems analytics is a plus.
  • Bonus: Experience with Dagster, DuckDB
  • Demonstrated UI/UX experience or data visualizations (dashboards).
  • Demonstrated experience on AI projects is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience building and launching products from scratch in a startup or new venture setting is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code (Terraform, Bicep) and observability tooling (Application Insights, OpenTelemetry, or similar)

Location: Oakland or Pasadena, hybrid working model

Compensation and benefits:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience and location ($150,000-$180,000)
  • Employee stock option grant at early-stage, fast-growing startup
  • Company-supported healthcare, dental, and vision
