Job description

This role is an opportunity for a Software Engineer to join a growing engineering team and contribute to the core Carbon Arc platform. You will help integrate a wide range of data sources into a powerful and responsive intelligence hub, building APIs and services that expose massive data assets securely and efficiently to internal teams and external customers.

You will thrive in this role if you enjoy working in a fast-paced startup environment where your decisions have meaningful technical and product impact. If you enjoy building high-quality products in a data-rich environment spanning many domains and data types, this role offers a steady stream of challenging problems to solve.

What You'll Do
  • Collaborate with backend and frontend engineers to design, build, and maintain RESTful APIs that expose massive data assets for user consumption
  • Develop custom, high-performance APIs supporting terabytes of structured and unstructured data
  • Ensure APIs are complete, intuitive, and useful for both internal teams and external customers
  • Implement proactive monitoring and observability for APIs with traceability back to source systems
  • Contribute to the reliability, security, and performance of production services
  • Participate in architectural discussions and engineering best-practice development
What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience designing and delivering production systems
  • Deep experience building and scaling RESTful APIs and integrating with complex backend data sources
  • Strong proficiency in Python for backend development (FastAPI, Django, or Flask preferred)
  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks, ideally React, with the ability to contribute when needed
  • Hands-on experience with Node.js or equivalent runtime environments
  • Strong SQL skills, including schema design, query optimization, tuning, and partitioning strategies
  • Experience working with structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data formats (e.g., JSON, Parquet)
  • Production experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience designing and maintaining data pipelines and DAG-based orchestration tools (Airflow, Prefect, etc.)
  • Practical experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS
  • Strong understanding of security, compliance, identity, and access management in distributed systems
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • A proactive mindset with the ability to adapt quickly and drive change
Nice to Have
  • Experience building developer-facing platforms or APIs used by external customers
  • Exposure to high-throughput or low-latency systems at scale
  • Familiarity with observability tooling (metrics, logging, tracing) in distributed systems
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code or deployment automation
  • Prior experience in startup or high-growth environments
What We Offer
  • Fully paid healthcare benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision)
  • Remote work options
  • 401(k) plan with employer contributions
  • Paid time off
  • Generous parental and family leave policies
  • Challenging problems to tackle with a supportive, entrepreneurially driven team
  • A strong work culture centered on integrity, excellence, truth, trust, and transparency
