System One, Inc. is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to lead and build software for tactical/mission-critical defense systems in Huntsville, AL.

This onsite, contract-to-hire role focuses on designing modern modular software frameworks and embedded components for analysis, simulation, and mission planning tools, with hands-on technical leadership. You will require a DoD clearance eligibility, expert C/C++, familiarity with Python/Java, and RTOS environments.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of relevant experience, or 8+ years with a master's degree.
• Eligible to obtain/maintain DoD security clearance.

Senior Software Engineer (Onsite) - Huntsville, AL

Type: Contract-to-hire

Work schedule: 40 hours/week

Security clearance: Active Secret clearance or ability to obtain

Pay rate: $117-125/HR

We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to lead and build software for tactical/mission-critical defense systems. You'll help design modern, modular software frameworks and support software products ranging from analysis/simulation tools to mission planning and other critical system components. This is a hands-on technical leadership role with real impact.

Must have:

• Candidate must possess at least a bachelor's degree in software engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent technical degree with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• 10+ years of relevant technical experience, or 8+ years with a master's degree in a related field.
• Candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance.
• Relevant technical experience must include developing, integrating, testing, or troubleshooting embedded software or embedded-adjacent applications that interface with, operate, monitor, support, simulate, control, or communicate with embedded systems.
• Must be a resident of North Alabama or willing to relocate to the Huntsville-North Alabama area.
• Experience leading software development teams on multi-disciplinary projects.
• Demonstrate expert-level experience with C/C++ required.
• Experience with Python or Java.
• Familiarity with real-time embedded systems and RTOS environments (e.g. VxWorks, FreeRTOS).
• Experience with software configuration management principles and techniques.
• Experience with software quality engineering concepts.
• Experience with good software standards and practices.

Preferred:

• Experience with open systems concepts, architectures, and implementation.
• Knowledge of Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) principles and application.
• Experience with embedded missile systems, aerospace, or weapons systems development.
• Hands-on experience implementing open architecture frameworks such as FACE, OMS, or SOSA.
• Experience with containerization and microservices technology.
• Knowledge of guidance & control algorithms.
• Knowledge of navigation systems.
• Knowledge of mission planning systems (NOMS, JMPS).
• Knowledge of sensors used in guidance, navigation, or mission planning systems.
• Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and SysML.
• Knowledge of software development standards: DO-178C, MIL-STD-882e, or similar.
• Experience with containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink for algorithm development and simulation a plus.
• Understanding of hardware-software integration and software systems engineering principles
• Formal experience in an official software leadership role with people-management responsibilities (e.g., IPT Lead, Technical Lead, Software Program Manager) — including direct reports, staffing, or performance management duties.
• Agile Scrum Master or Product Owner experience a plus.
• Deep understanding of software architecture patterns and design principles.
• Excellent communication skills with ability to present to senior leadership and government customers.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and systems-level thinking.
