Job summary

Formlabs in Somerville, MA is seeking a Materials Scientist to develop and bring to market advanced 3D printing materials, focusing on SLS. You will collaborate with product, hardware, and software teams to translate lab discoveries into scalable solutions.

The role requires a solid background in polymers, thermoplastics, and rigorous experimentation; you will design tests, analyze data, and document methods.

Qualifications

  • Experience bringing a new material to market from ideation to production.
  • Strong fundamentals in materials science and polymer product development.
  • Hands-on experience in thermo-plastic engineering.
  • Ability to design and conduct rigorous experiments and analyze data.

Responsibilities

  • Build world-class SLS materials for 3D printing from initial lab explorations to validation and commercialization.
  • Lead research that pushes the boundaries of material performance, turning discoveries into next‑gen solutions.
  • Partner with product, hardware, and software teams to iterate and improve material performance based on customer feedback.
  • Develop methodologies to evaluate material formulations in coordination with SLS print systems — balancing material chemistry, thermal dynamics, and printing parameters

The Job
  • Build world‑class SLS materials for 3D printing from initial lab explorations to validation and commercialization
  • Lead research that pushes the boundaries of SLS material performance, turning discoveries into next‑gen solutions.
  • Partner with product, hardware, and software teams to iterate and improve material performance based on customer feedback
  • Develop methodologies to evaluate material formulations in coordination with SLS print systems —balancing material chemistry, thermal dynamics, and printing parameters
You
  • Experience bringing a new material to market from ideation to production
  • Have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of materials science and polymer product development
  • Hands‑on experience in thermo‑plastic engineering
  • Passionate about testing and troubleshooting, not afraid to test hundreds of times
  • Love to harness data; can design and conduct rigorous experiments to optimize materials
  • Can work autonomously and take initiative to learn new skills to complete an objective
  • Understand the value of good documentation
  • B.S., M.S., or PhD in a relevant science or engineering field (all are welcome)
Bonus Skills
  • Experience developing materials for 3D printing, especially for SLA/DLP or SLS printers!
  • 3D CAD modeling
  • Programming skills (Python, Matlab, SQL, etc)

At Formlabs, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. Your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, location and expected impact on the organization.

The Annual Base Pay Range For This Role Is

$115,000—$142,000 USD
