Job summary

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting one (1) Superintendent of Welfare Shelters to oversee daily shelter operations, ensure compliance with standards, and coordinate a continuum of care through social, medical, and mental health services.

Key responsibilities include supervising security, serving as Fire Safety Coordinator, evaluating program effectiveness, and liaising with Community Boards to foster community relations.

Qualifications

• Four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus six years of full-time experience in relevant supervisory roles.
• Education/experience equivalent per civil service rules: college degree may substitute two years; MSW may substitute one year; casework in welfare shelters may substitute up to four years.

Responsibilities

• Monitor shelter operations to ensure compliance with agency standards, regulations and local laws.
• Oversee activities of security personnel with site managers.
• Serve as Certified Fire Safety Coordinator for the shelter.
• Provide oversight to social services, recreation, medical, occupational, mental health, and substance abuse programs.
• Evaluate program effectiveness and implement new or revised programs.
• Interface with Community Boards to promote good relations in the community.
• In the absence of the Deputy Director of Operations, assume duties.
