Job summary

County Of Maui invites applications for a Temporary Senior Services Transit Aide I in Maui County. The position trains in the Assisted Transportation Program, handling client transportation reservations and basic safety support for elderly customers.

As a trainee, you will receive orientation and staff will progress toward higher level duties; a valid Hawaii driver's license is required and high school completion is expected.

IMPORTANT: HIRING RATES WILL BE BASED ON AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS, THE APPLICANT'S QUALIFICATIONS, AND OTHER RELEVANT FACTORS.
Appointment may be made at any rate within the salary range from SR-07C ($3,201) to SR-07E ($3,470) per month.

Performs as a trainee and receives orientation in the principles, policies, and work processes of the Assisted Transportation Program; assists and receives training to perform the tasks of the higher level aides; and performs other related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This class differs from the Senior Services Transit Aide II in that the Senior Services Transit Aide I performs as a trainee and receives orientation in the principles, policies, and work processes of the Assisted Transportation Program; whereas the Senior Services Transit Aide II independently performs complex work in processing service requests and in preparing and maintaining weekly escort schedules in accordance with established practices and procedures for the Assisted Transportation Program.

  • Receives training and orientation in the driver routes and clients' localities, conditions, and needs;
  • Contacts all clients to confirm transportation reservations;
  • Provides transportation assistance for elderly citizens;
  • Communicates and interacts with clients and families in a positive and courteous manner;
  • Ensures safety and care of client by providing physical support for elderly, carrying article(s) or package(s), opening door(s) from home to car to medical facilities, resource agencies, shopping and/or banking, etc.;
  • Interprets and/or assists elderly in communicating and reinforces what has been said;
  • Receives requests for services or requests for information regarding services available for the elderly in the community;
  • Accurately recognizes and documents abnormal signs and symptoms of clients;
  • Refers elderly to other agencies when need arises for health, educational, social, recreational, or commercial resources;
  • Follows up with clients to ensure services received were appropriate;
  • Canvasses assigned areas to locate and identify the elderly, especially the isolated, frail and vulnerable elderly;
  • Coordinates services with other agencies and personnel in order to meet the needs and problems of the elderly;
  • Performs other duties as required.

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of experience meeting and dealing with people, preferably with the elderly.

License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3).

Knowledge of: the characteristics and needs of the elderly and target group individuals; pertinent functions of County, State, and Federal agencies; basic localities of Maui County; community resources and their utilization; interviewing techniques; public relations; basic skills in reading, writing, and speaking; basic first aid skills.

Ability to: communicate with clients; relate well to people of all ethnic and socio-economic groups; establish and maintain effective relationships with program participants and others; understand and explain written materials.

TEMPORARY POSITIONS:

Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months.
