Job Description

Position: Senior Scientist, Medicinal and Structural Chemistry (NMR Analytical Chemist)

Location: Foster City, CA

Role overview: This role offers an opportunity to maintain and develop Gilead’s NMR facility, impacting our Small Molecule Drug Discovery efforts. The ideal candidate will integrate medicinal chemistry and NMR spectroscopy expertise to advance drug discovery projects.

Responsibilities

1. NMR Strategy: Develop and enhance NMR spectroscopy capabilities, including data analysis workflows and quantitative NMR methods.
2. Instrument Maintenance: Maintain NMR instruments to ensure performance supporting medicinal chemistry research.
3. Structural Elucidation: Obtain and interpret multidimensional NMR data, providing detailed structural reports.
4. Medicinal Chemistry Expertise: Experience in small molecule drug discovery, SAR interpretation, hit-to-lead strategies, library expansion, and parallel chemistry.
5. Method Development: Develop and optimize traditional and novel NMR methods.
6. Documentation: Keep detailed, accurate records of experiments and analyses.
7. Training and Support: Train and support team members in NMR techniques.
8. Collaboration: Work effectively with cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

1. Educational background: Ph.D. (5+ years), Master's (10+ years), or Bachelor's (12+ years) in organic chemistry or related field, with emphasis on NMR and organic synthesis.
2. Experience: Proven NMR expertise in pharma, structure elucidation, and medicinal chemistry environment.
3. Skills: Strong synthetic skills, data analysis including coding, proficiency with Bruker NMR and Mnova software, troubleshooting, and clear communication.
4. Teamwork: Ability to collaborate effectively.
5. Attention to detail: High accuracy in work.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience with advanced NMR techniques, fragment screening, liquid handling for NMR prep, multi-step and automated synthesis, DMPK, and ADME principles.
