Job Description

AbbVie is seeking an experienced and highly motivated electrophysiologist to join our Circuit Biology team within Discovery Psychiatry. This pivotal role involves facilitating in vitro and ex vivo electrophysiological insights of circuit biology to drive our understanding of synaptic and circuit dysfunction in psychiatric disorders and treatment. This is an excellent opportunity to work at the forefront of psychiatry drug discovery research, contributing to target validation and compound profiling studies within a dynamic and collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently conceive, execute, and communicate original technical ideas and novel multi-disciplinary research that achieves project and area goals
  • Drive internal electrophysiology efforts by developing and optimizing disease-relevant in vitro and ex-vivo experiments to investigate synaptic and circuit function
  • Develop and maintain slice electrophysiology technology, methodology, and utility in psychiatric drug discovery
  • Generate, through lab-based activities, slice electrophysiology data to support projects
  • Ensure alignment of electrophysiology efforts with the broader goals of cross-functional teams
  • Present findings to internal teams and external collaborators or conferences
  • Contribute to strategic decision-making in psychiatry drug discovery
  • Provide scientific guidance and training to junior scientists and research associates
  • Serve as a lead scientist on projects and contribute scientific insights across multiple other project teams

Qualifications

  • PhD, MS, or BS in neuroscience, or related field, with typically 4+ (PhD), 10+ (MS) or 12+ (BS) years of experience
  • Extensive experience in whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology in acute brain slices, in vitro and ex vivo slice electrophysiology
  • Extensive experience using slice electrophysiology to study intact circuitry from striatal, cortical and hippocampal networks
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design and execution of hypothesis-driven studies related to synaptic and circuit function
  • Ability to process and interpret large datasets using appropriate software tools
  • Strong ability to work in cross-functional teams and effectively communicate scientific findings

Desired Qualifications
  • Previous industry experience within early discovery, preferably within psychiatry research
  • Expertise in ion channel drug discovery
  • Recognized and sought out as an expert in field or discipline
  • Track record of impactful publications
