Job summary

Cambrex is seeking a chemist in North Carolina to optimize existing chemical routes and develop alternate chemistry toward key intermediates and APIs. You will perform multistep syntheses, purification, and analysis using modern techniques, communicating with clients in team settings.

The role requires a Ph.D. or equivalent with significant lab experience in pharma/chemical development, with a strong emphasis on GMP, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications

• Organic chemistry knowledge with process development experience.
• Cross-functional understanding including analytical chemistry and engineering.
• GMP familiarity and ability to advise on regulatory strategies.
• Hands-on instrumentation experience: HPLC, GC, MS; automated reactors.
• Strong written and verbal communication; client-facing when needed.
• Problem solving and investigative leadership with limited supervision.
• Good time management and self-organization.
• Leadership and sharing knowledge across teams.
• Ability to draft and review technical reports with GDP practices.
• Active contribution in project meetings and internal initiatives.
• Credibility as a solid scientific contributor within the department.

Responsibilities

• Carry out multistep organic syntheses, isolation, and purification of targeted products under supervision or direction of a senior member.
• Understand and apply modern organic synthesis methodologies.
• Interpret data and spectra from analytical techniques as part of project work.
• Scale laboratory syntheses from milligrams to kilograms with appropriate controls.
• Coordinate project activities and manage resources with minimal supervision.
• Prepare comprehensive reports for internal and customer use.
• Assist in advising clients on regulatory guidance with manager input.
• Maintain a collaborative, safety-focused laboratory environment.
• Coordinate equipment and activities with GMP operations and manufacturing.
• Maintain clean, safe lab area and manage hazardous materials handling.
