Job summary

CenterPoint Energy is seeking a Senior Safety Specialist to support its Texas Gas Operations in Houston, working closely with frontline employees, contractors, leadership and other Safety and Training members to implement Safety and Health programs and provide safety guidance.

You will conduct field observations, participate in safety committees and learning events, review safety standards, develop trainings, and maintain regulatory relationships to identify impacts on the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Preferred CSP, ASP, CUSP, OHST, or CHST certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily safety support to assigned work groups.
  • Conduct observations/audits of personnel, tools, equipment, and work practices.
  • Identify and recommend programs, practices, tools and equipment to reduce risk for Gas Operations personnel.
  • Participate in and lead Learning Events within the organization.
  • Conduct incident investigations to identify causes and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with departments and leadership on safety program development and delivery.
  • Support SIF prevention with discussions, presentations, and training.
  • Review and apply OSHA, PHMSA, NFPA, ANSI, and ASTM workplace safety standards.

Job Summary

This Senior Safety Specialist position will support ourTexas Gas Operationsin Houston,by workingclosely withfront line employees,contractors,leadershipand other members of theSafety and Training organization.This position will provide safety supportby participating in field observations, safety committees,safety meetings,incident investigations and learning events,implementingSafety and Health programs,providingsafety guidancetoemployees,establishing relationships with coworkers, company personnelandindustry peers,andbyproviding excellent customer service to theTexas Gas Operationsorganization.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct observations/audits of personnel, tools, equipment, and work practices toprovide assurance forsafe andeffective execution of work.
  • Identify, evaluate, and make recommendations on programs,practices,toolsand equipmentaimed at reducing oreliminatingrisk forGasOperationspersonnel.
  • Participateinandlead LearningEventswithin the organization.
  • Conduct incident investigations toidentifycauses andcorrective actions.
  • Collaborates withvarious departments and levels of leadershipon the development, delivery and implementation of effective safety programs and policies.
  • Supports the organization's SIF prevention strategythrough discussions,presentations,and training.
Essential Functions con't

  • Monitor and review safety data for trends andidentifyrisk reduction strategies.

  • Maintains relationships as necessary withappropriate agenciesand keeps abreast of regulatory/governmental proceedings toidentifyimpacts to the organization.
  • Assistslegal department asrequiredregardingoccupational safety and potential exposure concerns.
  • Participate inEmergency Operationswhen emergency response is activated.
Education Description
  • Bachelor's degree in Safetyor related technical field (e.g., Industrial Engineering (Safety), Science, Business or Behavioral Sciences)from an accredited college or university.Ora combination of education and experience where two (2) years of experience may be substituted for one (1) year of education.This isin excess ofthe experience requirements noted below.
  • Preferredvalid certification as a:CSP, ASP, CUSP, OHST,or CHST
Experience
  • A minimum of five (5)yearsexperienceinSafety, with preferredsafetyexperience inGasUtilities,Oiland GasOperations,orIndustrialOrganizations.
Physical Requirements
  • Able to bend, stoop, squat and/or kneel and must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Able tolift upto 20 pounds repetitively, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Able todemonstrateand apply manual dexterity tooperatea computer, office equipment, trainingequipmentand training devices.
  • Able to view a personal computer monitor or laptop screen, sit,standor walk forlong periodsof time.
  • Able tooperatea motor vehicle, enter and exit vehicle withoutassistance, and drive for multiple hours a day.
  • Able to verbally exchange information with customers and company personnel.
Working Conditions
  • Able to work in shop,officeand field environments, including ability to tolerate exposure to all weather conditions, and if necessary, at night.
  • Able to work around potentially hazardous conditionssuch as moving machinery, energized equipment, flammable solvents, hazardous wastes,heat, dirty and/or greasy equipment and noise.
  • Able to wear personal protection safety equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hard hat, gloves, protectivefootwearand ear plugs, on an occasional basis.
  • Able to work infast-paced environmentwith a sense of urgencyto meet established deadlines.
  • Able to travel outside of primary work area, in any weather conditions and occasionally overnight, to field locations, remote areas, conferences and/or meetings.
  • Required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts.
