Qualifications

Summary: Plans and manages the general health, safety, and loss control policies and procedures for the organization.

Responsibilities/Functions:

  1. Assists with implementation of safe work practices as part of the Company’s overall Health and Safety program.
  2. Ensures compliance with Company, client, and governmental regulations.
  3. Onboards and orients all employees to the Company’s safety policies, programs, and other practices.
  4. Interacts constantly with project personnel to ensure an open line of communication for effective safety management and engagement of personnel.
  5. Conducts comprehensive on-site safety assessments as part of a constant monitoring process and ensures project teams make all necessary corrections.
  6. Administers the Company’s Substance Abuse Policy which includes client and governmental requirements.
  7. Develops Site Specific Health and Safety Plans and communicates plan to all project personnel.
  8. Develops and provides effective safety training to all employees.
  9. Coordinates review of Company safety requirements with subcontractors.
  10. Completes Accident Investigations, as needed; may accompany an injured employee for treatment and medical evaluation.
  11. Manages claims processes including interaction with insurance carriers, third-party claimants, and medical facilities.
  12. Participates in pre-construction and handoff meetings.
  13. Establishes and enforces jobsite safety procedures.
  14. Works closely with Company’s Safety Team to ensure consistent implementation of safety processes across all projects.
  15. Interacts with insurance carrier’s loss control representatives and client safety representatives during site safety assessments.
  16. Arranges for basic first aid training for jobsite personnel.
  17. Maintains safety files and records.
  18. Performs additional safety assignments, as needed.

Essential skills and experience:

  1. 4-year occupational safety/health degree or equivalent combinations of training and related experience.
  2. A minimum of 8 years of construction safety experience (highway/civil preferred).
  3. USACE (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) experience preferred.
  4. Thorough understanding of and ability to enforce all federal, state, local, and Company regulations.
  5. Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures.
  6. Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  7. Ability to train and educate others; train the trainer courses a plus.
  8. OSHA 500, Railroad and Marine work experience preferred.
  9. Fluency in Spanish helpful.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; and see and hear well (either naturally or with correction), stand; walk (stand for long periods of time) handle, or feel; use arms and hands to reach for, handle, and manipulate objects. The employee must frequently work or walk on uneven ground and is required to always wear steel-toed boots. It is mandatory that the employee wear approved personal protective equipment. Employee will perform a variety of duties while exposed to outside elements, working at heights, and confined or enclosed spaces.
