Job summary

Field AI in Irvine, CA is seeking a Senior Software Engineer in Behavior & Interaction to own end-to-end software that turns autonomy into field-ready missions. You will design behavior orchestration, robot interaction, and mission-to-insight pipelines, and mentor teammates while shipping production systems for challenging industrial environments.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in CS/EE/Robotics with 5+ years shipping production software.
• Expert-level Python and C++, with ROS2 experience.
• Hands-on experience deploying ROS2-based systems to production robots.
• Experience building behavior orchestration systems (behaviour trees, state machines, task/mission planning).
• Experience with human-in-the-loop systems: HRI, dashboards, or operator-facing tools.
• Strong system design skills across APIs, IPC, middleware, networking, and real-time data pipelines.
• Track record of shipping to production and turning field data into product improvements.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

• Own the behavior and mission layer that operationalizes autonomy into repeatable, customer-facing missions.
• Architect behavior orchestration for autonomous missions including failure handling for unstructured environments.
• Design and build human and robot interaction behavior.
• Validate behaviors on real platforms in customer conditions and feed insights back into product.
• Lead design reviews and architectural decisions; raise engineering bar across the team.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate across autonomy, perception, product, field deployment, and customer teams.
