Job summary

ms consultants, inc. in Raleigh or Wilmington, NC is seeking an experienced Roadway Engineer to join the North Carolina Transportation Group.

The role focuses on designing complex interstate and local road projects, leading design teams, mentoring engineers, and managing schedules and budgets. The ideal candidate holds a BS in Engineering (ABET-accredited), a NC PE license (or can obtain within 6 months), and demonstrates strong client communication.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited BS in Engineering required.
• PE license in NC required, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Design, preparation, and delivery of roadway design plans; NCDOT experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design complex interstate geometrics and local road projects.
• Lead a design team and mentor junior engineers.
• Prepare and negotiate project fee proposals.
• Develop design schedules and cost estimates, ensuring on-time, within-budget submittals.
• Build and maintain client relationships through presentations and communications.

About The Transportation Business Unit

What You'll Do:

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to design complex interstate geometrics and local road projects. Depending on your experience, you may also lead a design team, with both immediate and long-term growth potential. Key responsibilities include:

• Roadway Design: Take charge of the design and plan preparation for both highway and local road projects
• Quality Assurance: Lead internal quality reviews to ensure that plans meet the highest technical standards
• Mentorship: Provide guidance and feedback to junior engineers, helping them grow professionally
• Proposal Development: Assist in preparing and negotiating project fee proposals
• Project Scheduling and Budgeting: Prepare design schedules, construction cost estimates, and deliver staged project submittals on time and within budget
• Client Interaction: Build and maintain strong client relationships through presentations and regular communication
• Scope and Change Management: Recognize scope changes and assist with contract negotiations when necessary
• Team Collaboration: Work closely with a talented team of engineers, technicians, and administrative staff to successfully execute transportation projects

What You'll Bring:

We are looking for an experienced engineer who thrives in a collaborative environment and has the technical and leadership skills to drive success. The ideal candidate will have:

Education and Experience:

• BS in Engineering from an ABET-accredited College or University
• A Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina is required, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months
• Proficiency in the design, preparation, and delivery of roadway design plans.(NCDOT design experience preferred)

Skills & Knowledge:

• Familiarity with AASHTO, FHWA, and NCDOT standards
• Experience with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, and AutoCAD
• Prior experience managing projects, including developing proposals and overseeing project timelines and budgets
• A background in mentoring or managing teams, with the ability to collaborate effectively and independently
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with clients and team members alike
