Job summary

Gusto is hiring for a Senior Software Engineer on the Risk Engineering team to build scalable risk systems and drive complex, end‑to‑end projects. You will design and deliver core platform capabilities, collaborate with product, design, and data teams, and set technical direction for a high‑impact domain.

You will mentor peers, tackle reliability and security concerns, and contribute to a culture of test‑driven development while leveraging AI tools to accelerate delivery.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience.
• Experience applying AI tools to accelerate development, testing, and documentation.
• Experience designing, building, and testing production-grade code and architecture for complex projects.
• Experience owning a project end-to-end with cross-functional partners.
• Ability to set technical direction and trade-offs.
• Strong communication and collaboration in a team.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test infrastructure capabilities for the Risk team.
• Lead end-to-end projects from technical design through rollout with cross-functional partners.
• Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and TypeScript/React applications.
• Serve as a domain expert for Risk platform capabilities.
• Set timelines and communicate progress to stakeholders.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to a high-performing team.
• Address technical debt and drive quality improvements within the domain.
• Participate in on-call rotations and handle reliability/security incidents.
