Job summary

Airbus Americas Customer Services, Inc. in Mobile, Alabama is seeking a Retrofit Solutions Lead Engineer to own the end-to-end lifecycle of SBs and kit projects, from drafting the initial Technical Offer to implementing the solution on the aircraft.

You will bridge engineering design, operational teams, and airline customers. The role requires leadership across the SB process, DOS delegations, and cost/ROM assessments, with travel willingness and onsite work.

Retrofit Solutions Lead Engineer

The Retrofit Solutions Lead Engineer is the driving force behind our Avionics Systems Upgrades. In this highly visible role, you will own the end‑to‑end lifecycle of Service Bulletins (SB) and Kit projects— from drafting the initial Technical Offer (TO) and steering SB production, to physically embodying the solution on the aircraft. You will serve as the vital link between engineering design, operational teams, and our airline customers.

Your Working Environment

The Engineering Center in Mobile, Alabama houses hundreds of Airbus engineers who assist in the design and development of Airbus commercial aircraft cabins, including aftermarket upgrades, reconfigurations and services of all product types across the globe.

Your Challenges
  • System Subject Matter Expert: Immerse yourself in avionics upgrade topics to become the go‑to technical authority, anticipating customer needs and identifying innovative retrofit solutions.
  • Engineering Mentorship: Leverage your deep knowledge of system design to guide and answer technical queries from Retrofit Solutions Engineers (RSE) and SB authors during the preparation phase.
  • Technical Authority: Actively develop your knowledge of SB Technical Approvals to successfully obtain and execute Design Organization Approval (DOS) delegations.
  • End‑to‑End Execution: Lead the complete SB project lifecycle—manage planning, secure internal/industrial capacity, and commit to contractual delivery dates that feed our commercial and accounting units.
  • Technical Assessment: Perform rigorous technical assessments prior to SB launch (including SEKOM for standard SBs) and execute Technical Offers (TO), Rough Order of Magnitudes (ROMs), and cost assessments.
  • Matrix Leadership: While this is an individual contributor role, you will act as a pivotal leader, coordinating operational teams to guarantee project quality and on‑time delivery.

Your Boarding Pass
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science or Engineering (Electrical highly preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience leading large, diverse engineering projects in the aviation industry (spanning project management, design, and production).
  • Direct experience with the commercial aircraft retrofit process and MRO operations.
  • Deep knowledge of Configuration Management, interpreting Bill of Materials, and modification requirements.
  • Authorized to work in the US.
Physical Requirements

  • Vision: able to see and read computer screens and other electronic equipment, documents, reports and engineering drawings.
  • Hearing: able to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds on the production floor including safety warnings or alarms.
  • Speaking: able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications.
  • Equipment Operation: able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment and some tools, including production tools such as hydraulic lifts.
  • Carrying: able to carry documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs (14kgs).
  • Lifting: able to lift documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs (14kgs).
  • Pushing/Pulling: able to push and pull small office furniture and some equipment and tools.
  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on the computer.
  • Squatting/Kneeling: able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving.
  • Standing: able to stand for discussions in offices or on the production floor.
  • Travel: able to travel independently and at short notice.
  • Walking: able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Required PPE includes safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, respirators/masks, and/or protective gloves as required by site and/or customer site.
