Job description

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science (Rosenstiel) invites applications for a full-time Senior Research Associate I position. We seek a motivated individual to join our Ocean Carbon Cycle group to support oceanographic fieldwork, laboratory analyses, instrument maintenance, data processing, and reporting in support of ocean carbon and climate research. This position is physically stationed at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division in Miami, FL.

Primary Responsibilities & Duties

The candidate will work alongside established scientists in the group while carrying out tasks related to the acquisition and analysis of biogeochemical and inorganic carbon data, maintenance and upgrading of analytical systems, and scientific reporting. Specific duties include:
Overseeing lab activities for the ocean biogeochemistry group Operate state-of-the-art instrumentation to measure carbonate parameters in lab and during extended cruises (ranging from 25 to 60 days at sea) and on site in the lab. Help install, troubleshoot, calibrate, and maintain state of the art chemical and oceanographic instrumentation both in the laboratory and in the field. Data processing, quality control documentation including internal data reports, and timely submission of biogeochemical datasets and metadata to national and international data repositories.

Qualifications & Skills

• Required Education: Master of Science (M.S.) degree or equivalent professional work experience in oceanography, marine science, chemistry, engineering, physics, or a related discipline.
• Technical Skills: Demonstrated experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and interfacing oceanographic or automated chemical analytical equipment.
• Data Integrity: Meticulous attention to detail and strict commitment to following established analytical best practices and quality assurance protocols.
• Desirable Software: Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required. Experience with oceanographic software, data formats, and languages such as MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, NetCDF, or Ocean DataView is highly desirable.
• Hardware & Electronics: Basic working knowledge of mechanics, computer interfacing, and electronics.
• Work Ethic: Strong organizational, time-management, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
• Fieldwork Capability: Ability and willingness to participate in extended research cruises and undertake fieldwork trips. Previous research cruise experience is a plus.
• Teamwork: Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a proven track record of working collaboratively in a diverse, team-oriented environment.
