Job summary

A prominent academic institution in Miami is seeking a CIMAS Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct numerical modeling experiments in Physical Oceanography. Job description

Overview

CIMAS Postdoctoral Research Associate (Physical Oceanography and Climate Dynamics)

This position is situated in the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (RSMAS). The research involves designing, performing and analyzing numerical modeling experiments to explore inter-ocean exchanges and regional sinks of heat, freshwater, and carbon associated with the global overturning circulation. The research will involve close collaboration with scientists at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML), CIMAS and RSMAS.

Responsibilities
  • Devise and conduct numerical model experiments to explore inter-ocean exchanges and regional sinks of heat, freshwater, and carbon using global ocean–sea ice coupled models.
  • Analyze model results, present findings at scientific meetings, and publish results in scientific journals.
  • Investigate topics such as natural versus anthropogenic changes in Atlantic heat transport during the instrumental period; pathways of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and their contributions to meridional transports of heat, salt, and carbon; and the temporal variability of the global overturning circulation and its impact on anthropogenic CO2 uptake, transport and storage.
Supervision and Collaboration

The incumbent will work with minimal supervisory oversight and report periodically to the CIMAS Director. Technical guidance will be provided through interactions with colleagues at AOML and CIMAS. Concepts will be developed and refined by peer discussion within and outside CIMAS. Results will be reviewed by the CIMAS Director for completeness and compliance with UM, CIMAS, and AOML policies. The incumbent shall provide results for inclusion in CIMAS reports and proposals as required by the Director.

Guidelines and Originality

It is expected that the incumbent will interact strongly with AOML and RSMAS scientists to leverage a wide range of experience and resources. The successful candidate will exchange concepts with other scientists to adapt new ideas.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography/Atmospheric Science or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish results in peer‑reviewed literature.
  • Highly desirable: knowledge of Unix and Fortran, and the ability to run ocean or coupled atmosphere–ocean models.
  • Prior experience with NCAR’s Community Earth System Model (CESM/CCSM) or GFDL’s Modular Ocean Model (MOM) is desirable but not required.
