Job summary

Colorado School of Mines is seeking an Accountant III – Research to lead expense management for sponsored projects in the Office of Research Administration (ORA). The role emphasizes setup of new awards, monitoring budgets, and reporting across campus, with a focus on regulatory interpretation and accurate financial data presentation.

The position requires a strong background in sponsored research accounting, familiarity with federal regulations, and the ability to train staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or equivalent experience.
• Five or more years of sponsored research accounting experience.
• Experience with high-volume portfolio and diverse sponsors.
• Knowledge of federal regulations and research terms.
• Strong analytical and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Create and amend research accounts in the financial system and ORA tracking system using agreements and proposal documents.
• Monitor and reconcile award budgets, balances, and expenses, including pre- and post-expenditure reviews.
• Review deficit spending requests to assess financial risk and policy compliance.
• Approve salary redistributions and journal entries as needed for proper expenditure accounting.
• Prepare financial and non-financial reports within sponsor timeframes; assist with closeout actions and award near-term reporting.
• Provide training and act as subject expert on award monitoring and closeout processes.
