Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist to review inpatient records within 24–48 hours of admission and to drive documentation accuracy reflecting severity of illness and risk of mortality.

The role requires CDI leadership, daily provider follow-ups, and collaboration with HIM and physician leadership. Remote work across the U.S. is available, with PT hours and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Must have MD or MBBS degree or RN with active US license and 5+ years acute care experience.
• CCDS, CDIP, or CCS certification or willingness to obtain within 1 year or hire.
• 2+ years as a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist in acute care.
• Proficient in clinical medicine, pathophysiology, and pharmacology.
• Proficient PC skills (Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EMR).
• Ability to work Pacific Time Zone business hours (Mon-Fri).

Responsibilities

• Reviews inpatient clinical records within 24-48 hours of admit to ensure accurate code assignment and reflect severity of condition.
• Conducts daily follow-ups with providers to obtain documentation specificity.
• Leads CDI improvement efforts with clear recommendations and rationale.
• Communicates with providers to clarify information and document diagnoses per severity and risk.
• Provides timely feedback on opportunities for improvement in documentation.
• Ensures use of CDI software to document review activity.
• Develops relationships with HIM Coding Professionals for effective collaboration.
• Collaborates with Physician Advisor/VPMA to resolve provider issues in the CDI process.
