Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a Senior/Principal R&D Software Architect to design and build production-grade, distributed systems for mission-critical counter-autonomy applications. The role emphasizes hands-on technical leadership and architecture definition across edge, on-premises, and backend environments.

The candidate will guide engineers through architecture reviews, implement robust software, and collaborate with operators and stakeholders to meet performance metrics and risks.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of directly relevant experience or equivalent mix of education and engineering work.
• Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance.
• Graduate degree in CS or related field preferred; independent research projects encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Design overall software and system architectures for distributed, real-time operational systems.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership through architecture reviews, interface definition, and tradeoff decisions.
• Develop production-quality software for edge and backend compute environments.
• Ensure reliability across geographically distributed nodes and degraded/low-bandwidth connections.
• Build fault-tolerant capabilities including failover, buffering, and graceful degradation.
• Design and implement end-to-end sensor data pipelines and multi-sensor fusion.
