Job summary

Glanbia is seeking a senior researcher to oversee the Cheese Innovation Center and lead a team of R&D scientists in developing value-added cheese products. You will drive collaboration with marketing, sales, customers, and universities to identify new markets and accelerate product and process innovations.

You will develop analytical methods, manage safety programs, and apply advanced theories to create competitive, market-leading cheese solutions.

Qualifications

• Ph.D./Masters with 5+ years dairy/cheese R&D experience or equivalent.
• Experience managing pilot plant operations and staff.
• Familiarity with key vendors of functional ingredients for food processing.
• Knowledge of statistical experimental design and data interpretation.
• Demonstrated analytical expertise in cheese/dairy chemistry and test development.
• Strong scientific writing and presentation abilities.
• Ability to collaborate with universities on new technologies in cheese production.
• Knowledge of cheese composition and labeling regulations.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Cheese R&D Scientists and CIC staff.
• Collaborate with Marketing and Sales to identify new markets via value-added products.
• Coordinate with customers, universities, and industry to develop new cheese products/processes.
• Develop analytical and processing methods to characterize products and enable new manufacturing capabilities.
• Apply new theories to create innovative products and processes for competitive edge.
• Oversee scheduling and prioritization of CIC activities.
• Manage the CIC's food safety plan and pilot plant programs.
• Lead safety training in coordination with EH&S.
• Liaise with academics to summarize tech updates on strategic issues.
• Support PDP processes and provide performance feedback and disciplinary input.
• Prepare reports on lab tests, trials, and next steps impacting business initiatives.
• Synthesize literature and expert ideas for project advancement.
• Lead customer projects and plant trials, delivering viable solutions with customers.
• Provide technical dairy nutrition and labeling information to QA and sales.

The Opportunity

This position coordinates with sales and marketing for the on-going development of value added products. In addition, this position will manage longer term research projects that will provide new products and processing technologies that provide a competitive edge. This position will manage daily operations of the Cheese Innovation Center (CIC).

Responsibilities

• Manage the Cheese Research and Development Scientists, and CIC staff.
• Work with Marketing and Sales to help customers identify new markets by the development of value‑added products.
• Oversee collaboration with customers, universities, and the food processing industry to develop new products and processes related to cheese production.
• Develop new analytical and process methods to further characterize existing and new products and to provide new manufacturing capability to the business.
• Develop and apply new theories to Glanbia products/processes, applications to create advanced, innovative new products and processes that drive competitive advantage and market leadership for Glanbia.
• Manage all scheduling and prioritization of activities in the CIC.
• Manage the food safety plan and programs for the pilot plant.
• Oversee the safety programs and training in coordination with EH&S.
• Be a key liaison with academics to summarize and provide updates of information and technology related to strategic issues.
• Perform Glanbia's PDP process and provide feedback periodically on performance, including disciplinary occurrences.
• Prepare reports concerning the results of laboratory tests or product development trials including next steps and impact on key business initiatives.
• Collect, read, compile, utilize and synthesize ideas and methods from existing literature, experts, files and publications.
• Work extensively with customers by leading customer projects, designing customer plant trials, and delivering commercially viable solutions in partnership with customers.
• Provide technical information to quality assurance and sales by providing accurate information related to cheese nutrition and associated labelling guidelines.
• Utilize GPS processes, driving zero losses, and upholds the culture of Glanbia non‑negotiables.

The Skills you will bring to the team

• Ph.D. or Masters degree in food science, dairy science or related field, with 5 years of dairy & cheese product development or R&D experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with pilot plant operations and management.
• Familiarity with key vendors who provide functional ingredients used within the food processing industry.
• Knowledge of statistical experimental design.
• Demonstrated analytical experience, and knowledge in cheese and dairy chemistry.
• Demonstrated expert test development knowledge.
• Developed presentation and scientific writing skills.
• Ability to interact with Universities to keep abreast of advancing technologies related to cheese production.
• Familiarity with regulations for the composition and labeling of cheese products.
