Job summary

ABB is seeking a Senior R&D Engineer in Mebane, NC to lead the development of next-generation medium voltage switchgear, transforming complex challenges into safer, more efficient power solutions. You will partner with the factory to drive projects from concept through prototyping to production and mentor junior engineers.

You will collaborate with Product Managers and R&D teams across the globe, validate robustness through simulations and testing, and ensure ANSI/IEEE/NEMA/UL compliance

Qualifications

• Experience in R&D for electrical power equipment or similar industry.
• Knowledge of ANSI/IEEE/NEMA/UL standards and testing requirements.
• Experience executing type tests at internal and external labs.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD and PLM tools for development workflows.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development of new product designs (Mechanical/Electrical) and cost optimization.
• Collaborate with Product Managers, Project Managers, and R&D Engineers through the product life cycle.
• Validate product robustness using simulations, analytical methods, and physical testing.
• Organize and conduct design reviews for feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
• Review test plans and results to ensure performance and standards compliance.
• Mentor junior engineers and drive innovation in product design.
• Partner with global teams to deliver market-leading solutions.
