Job summary

HRL Laboratories, an IBM company, is seeking a Ph.D.-level researcher to design, test, and analyze optical, optoelectronic, and photonic experiments for quantum communications systems. You will develop approaches in integrated photonics, quantum optics, and related tech, translating theory into practical prototypes.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary R&D teams, present results, publish in top journals, and contribute to proposals and technical documentation.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Research experience in integrated photonics, quantum optics, quantum networking, or nonlinear optics.
• Demonstrated ability to translate research results into practical experimental systems.
• Experience with multiphysics simulation at device and optical-system levels.
• CAD and photonic/electronic layout experience is a plus.
• Laboratory expertise with free-space optics, fiber optics, integrated photonics, microwave systems, and vacuum equipment.
• Expertise in quantum optics, quantum entanglement, integrated photonics, or quantum networking.
• Experience using Lumerical or similar simulation/design tools.
• Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
• Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary R&D teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, simulate, calculate, construct, and test integrated photonics and electro-optical experiments.
• Develop experimental setups and prototypes to investigate new concepts.
• Perform data collection, analysis, and documentation of results.
• Troubleshoot experimental systems and propose solutions.
• Present findings and recommendations to team and stakeholders.
• Prepare technical documentation and invention disclosures.
• Contribute to proposals and grant applications.
• Author and contribute to peer‑reviewed publications.
• Attend and present at scientific conferences.
• Brief customers on technical developments and project progress.
• Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and other technical staff across disciplines.
