Job summary

HRL Laboratories, an IBM company, seeks a physicist/engineer to design, build, test and analyze optical, optoelectronic, and photonic experiments for quantum communications systems and platforms.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary R&D teams to advance quantum technologies, and you will design, model, set up, and test free-space and fiber optic experiments, plus semiconductor devices. Strong communication and lab skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's degree in physics, electrical engineering, optical engineering, or related discipline.
• Some prior experience with microfabrication, free-space/fiber optics, electronics, or computer-controlled experiments from coursework or internships.
• Strong desire to learn and be trained in laboratory techniques and procedures; able to work in a dynamic team and communicate well.

Responsibilities

• Design, model, set up, and test free-space and fiber optic experiments for quantum photonic/electronic devices.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary R&D teams to advance quantum communications technologies.
• Improve processes, perform measurements, summarize data, and present findings to scientists.
• Work with mechanical and electrical teams to troubleshoot complex systems.
