Job summary

payabl. is seeking a senior backend engineer to advance payment gateway modernization. You will extend Perl components while designing scalable Python microservices, ensuring high availability and robust integrations with external payment APIs.

You will lead architectural decisions, improve CI/CD with GitLab, and collaborate with AWS-based deployments. Strong English communication is essential in our remote, internationally distributed team.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with deep Python expertise (FastAPI and AsyncIO preferred).
• Experience with Perl production code and bridging legacy to modern systems is mandatory.
• Proven experience building and scaling microservices architectures and high-throughput systems (payments, trading, or real-time processing).
• Deep understanding of integrating third-party APIs, webhooks, idempotency, and retry policies.
• Strong experience with Docker/Containerization and AWS cloud infrastructure (Lambda, SQS/SNS).
• Advocate for clean, intentional code and strong engineering logic over AI-generated snippets.
• Familiarity with event-driven architecture and messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Track record of owning features from design to production and mentoring others.
• Strong English communication skills, written and spoken.

Responsibilities

• Dual-Track Engineering: support the existing Perl-based gateway while building high-performance Python microservices.
• System Modernization: implement scalable Python services to replace legacy components under high load.
• High-Stakes Integrations: manage third-party APIs, webhooks, and external payment services with robust error handling.
• Technical Leadership: lead code reviews, drive best practices, identify bottlenecks to improve performance.
• Architecture & Deployment: collaborate with DevOps to enhance CI/CD pipelines (GitLab) and design AWS-based solutions.
• Product-Focused Delivery: understand business logic and user impact beyond code implementation.
• Production Ownership: troubleshoot production issues with a zero-downtime mindset.
