payabl. is seeking a Senior Backend Developer to join the Core Gateway team. You will maintain a Perl-based payment gateway while building a modern Python microservices platform for high performance and reliability in live production environments.

The role involves dual tracks: supporting the legacy gateway and leading the architecture of the next-generation system, with emphasis on scalability, containerization, and cloud deployments. Strong English communication is essential.

Qualifications

5+ years of backend engineering with Python and AsyncIO/FastAPI preferred.
Experience with Perl and reading/refactoring legacy code.
Solid API experience with third-party services, webhooks, retry policies.
CI/CD pipelines experience, GitLab preferred; Docker containerization; AWS familiarity.
Exposure to event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, queues).
Advocates for clean code and clear reasoning behind implementations.
Curiosity about product impact and end-user/business value.
Strong English written and verbal communication for cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

Dual-track maintenance: support Perl gateway while migrating to new Python microservices.
Design, develop, and maintain Python server-side components for performance and scalability.
Integrate third-party APIs and external payment services across legacy and modern layers.
