Job summary

Stem, Inc. is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to advance physics-based PV performance modeling within PowerTrack, Stem’s asset management platform.

You will design and improve models for solar PV and battery assets, ensure data inputs are accurate, and drive actionable insights for customers. You will own forecast models, performance reporting, and experimental validation, while collaborating with software and data engineering teams to deploy scalable solutions.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years in data science, analytics, PV/solar performance engineering, or related field
• PhD includes 3+ years in relevant discipline; or 5+ years with MS/BS
• Hands-on PV performance modeling experience; pvlib or similar
• Strong statistics and ML foundation; regression, time-series, hypothesis testing
• Proficient in Python and data libraries (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn)
• Advanced SQL skills with large-scale time-series data
• Experience building production-grade models and reproducible code
• Ability to communicate complex findings to diverse audiences

Responsibilities

• Lead physics-based performance models for PV and battery assets within PowerTrack
• Own accuracy and defensibility of performance and losses reporting
• Develop time-series forecasting models for expected-energy prediction
• Run experiments, validate models, and prepare documentation and benchmarks
• Collaborate with software/data engineers to integrate models into production
• Align ML-based fault detection with underperformance categorization
• Provide guidance and code reviews for junior data scientists
