Job summary

Impulse Space in Redondo Beach is seeking a Senior Propulsion Component Engineer (Electromechanical) to own all aspects of propulsion component design from concept to realization, collaborating with a fast-paced, agile team building high-performance spacecraft from a clean sheet.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering and 5+ years in high power density motor/actuator design, with hands-on experience across fluid, electrical and mechanical systems and CAD tooling.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of demonstrated experience in high power density motor and/or actuator design.
• Strong understanding of electromechanical component design including force/torque margins, materials, motor selection, wear, electronics, motor control and software/firmware interfaces.
• Hands-on experience with fluid, electrical and mechanical systems.
• Hands-on experience with propulsion systems.
• Demonstrated proficiency in CAD software with ability to learn new tools.
• Demonstrated ability in requirements definition, conceptual design, procurement, fabrication, assembly and testing of hardware.

Responsibilities

• Design propulsion system electromechanical components including linear and rotary actuators and motors.
• Perform integrated system trades on power systems, actuation rates, and force margins to arrive at optimal solution for flight vehicle.
• Own all aspects of component design from initial concepts to product realization.
• Generate detailed CAD models and manufacturing drawings.
• Perform thermal and structural analysis as required.
• Establish assembly procedures and work hands-on with technicians to refine this process.
• Define and support rigorous component development and qualification testing.
• Resolve technical issues with innovative and resourceful solutions.
