Job Summary:
The Staff Accountant is responsible for producing accurate financial reports for both internal and external customers. Key duties includes preparing monthly financial statements, maintaining
detailed records of balance sheet accounts, reviewing profit and loss statements for accuracy,
ensuring general ledger accountability, performing reconciliations, and handling special projects
as assigned. This position reports to the Controller.
- Prepare monthly property financial statements, including balance sheets, cash flow statements, and profit and loss statements, while maintaining supporting account reconciliations and audit work papers.
- Fulfill financial reporting requirements for various external agencies on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis.
- Monitor costs against budget, alerting management when necessary, and providing recommendations for adjustments.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and accounting best practices in all financial reporting activities.
- Maintain fixed asset schedules.
- Identify and communicate financial variances to appropriate personnel.
- Recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Maintain internal controls to ensure adherence to company policies.
- Monitor cash balances and make disbursement decisions for properties, coordinating with Accounts Payable for payments.
- Perform general ledger and period closing tasks, including journal entries, month-end work papers, accruals, and special allocations.
- Oversee cash management, including the monitoring and maintenance of required reserves and escrows.
- Assist external accountants with year-end processes, including tax returns, audits, and preparation of supporting schedules.
- Document accounting procedures and processes.
Skills/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field.
- Minimum of three years of experience producing monthly financial statements through month-end close.
- CPA, CFA, or CMA designation preferred.
- Experience in the Real Estate or Property Accounting industry preferred.
- Strong understanding of GAAP principles required.
- Advanced skills in spreadsheet and accounting software.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Capacity to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines efficiently.
- Competitive base salary $75,000 - $100,000 DOE
