Founded in 1964, we have over 50 years of experience in real estate, specializing in community association and multi-family management, encompassing market rate and affordable housing. Our team of over 800 talented professionals shares a commitment to delivering unparalleled service, maintaining the highest quality standards, and exceeding client expectations. Join us as we continue to redefine the standards of excellence in property management!

Who we need:

The Senior Property Accountant is a key member of the Barkan Management Accounting Department, serving as a critical link between our accounting team leads and our staff accountants. This is a player-coach role with a dual focus: the Senior Property Accountant manages their own portfolio of community association and multi-family properties end to end, while providing direct oversight, mentoring, and quality review to a group of 2 to 3 remote staff accountants. This role is an ideal opportunity for an experienced property accountant looking to expand their impact beyond their own portfolio.

What you'll do:
  • Manage a portfolio of community association and multi-family properties, producing accurate monthly financial workbooks with full supporting schedules.
  • Analyze and reconcile all balance sheet accounts monthly for assigned properties.
  • Prepare and post journal entries including accruals, reclasses, and adjustments.
  • Send preliminary financial statements to account executives and property managers, incorporate feedback, and issue final financials in accordance with contractual due dates.
  • Monitor cash flow and ensure timely processing of payments across assigned properties.
  • Communicate proactively with account executives, property managers, and team leads on financial matters, variances, and reporting deliverables.
  • Maintain client financial information on a strictly confidential basis.
Team Oversight and Mentoring
  • Provide direct oversight of 2 to 3 remote staff accountants, reviewing their monthly financial workpapers, reconciliations, and journal entries for accuracy and completeness.
  • Serve as a day-to-day resource and go-to mentor for staff accountants, answering questions and providing guidance on accounting treatment, system usage, and process.
  • Review at least two financials per staff accountant per month to identify trends, recurring issues, and development opportunities.
  • Support staff accountants through onboarding, training on Barkan systems and processes, and ongoing professional development.
  • Communicate team performance and workload concerns to the Accounting Team Lead in a timely manner.
Quality Control and Process
  • Ensure that all financial statements produced by the team are accurate, complete, and delivered on time per contractual obligations.
  • Identify recurring issues or coding errors across the team portfolio and work proactively with staff accountants to resolve them.
  • Participate in year-end audit preparation and support external auditors with workpapers, schedules, and documentation as needed.
  • Support budget review process for assigned properties, ensuring submitted budgets are complete and accurate before finalization.
  • Other tasks as directed by the Accounting Team Lead or Controller.
What we're looking for:
  • Minimum of 4+ years of property accounting experience, with a strong foundation in community association and/or multi-family accounting.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of properties end to end, including monthly close, balance sheet reconciliation, financial statement preparation, and variance analysis.
  • Prior experience mentoring, training, or reviewing the work of junior accounting staff preferred; a readiness to step into that role is required.
  • Proficiency in CINC and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Familiarity with Yardi or similar multi-family accounting platforms a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work effectively with remote team members, account executives, and property managers.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • High standards of integrity and confidentiality in all client matters.
Additional Requirements:
  • Reading and writing work-related documents in English, reviewing financial reports and applying accounting principles.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with remote team members, account executives, and external partners.
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid environment; three days in our Newton, MA office and two days remote after the initial onboarding period.
