Job description

Senior Project Manager / Estimator - Metal Fabrication

Industry: Metal Fabrication / Manufacturing

We are looking for an experienced Project Manager / Estimator to join our growing metal fabrication operation. This position is responsible for managing projects from initial customer inquiry and estimating through production, delivery, and final completion. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of metal fabrication, welding, machining, materials, manufacturing processes, and job costing, along with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, engineering, purchasing, and production. This is a hands‑on position in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment. We are looking for someone who can look at a print, understand how something needs to be built, identify potential problems before they become expensive problems, and develop an accurate and competitive quote.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review customer RFQs, drawings, specifications, and scope of work.
  • Develop accurate estimates for fabricated metal components, weldments, assemblies, and related manufacturing work.
  • Determine material requirements, labor hours, welding requirements, machining requirements, outside processing, and other project costs.
  • Obtain and evaluate material and subcontractor pricing.
  • Work with engineering and production to determine the most efficient and cost‑effective manufacturing approach.
  • Identify potential fabrication, machining, material, and quality issues during the estimating process.
  • Prepare and submit professional customer quotations.
  • Manage awarded projects from order entry through completion.
  • Establish project schedules and coordinate requirements with production, purchasing, engineering, and quality.
  • Monitor project costs, labor, materials, and schedule performance.
  • Communicate regularly with customers regarding project status, changes, delivery schedules, and technical questions.
  • Manage customer change orders and communicate the financial and scheduling impact of changes.
  • Track projects to ensure they remain on schedule and within budget.
  • Assist with resolving production issues that affect cost, quality, or delivery.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and costing information.
  • Develop strong relationships with customers and identify opportunities for additional business.
Qualifications
Required
  • 5+ years of experience in metal fabrication, manufacturing, estimating, project management, or a closely related field.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Working knowledge of welding and metal fabrication processes.
  • Understanding of steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other common fabrication materials.
  • Ability to develop labor and material estimates.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and internal departments.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
Preferred
  • Experience estimating structural or miscellaneous steel fabrication.
  • Experience with CNC laser, plasma, saw, press brake, machining, or other fabrication processes.
  • Experience with weldments and fabricated assemblies.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems.
  • Experience with job costing and manufacturing financials.
  • Familiarity with ASME, AWS, or other applicable industry standards.
  • Previous experience working directly with manufacturing customers.
  • Experience managing projects from RFQ through shipment.
What We Are Looking For

The right person for this position is more than a traditional office‑based project manager. We need someone who understands how things are actually made. You should be comfortable looking at a drawing and asking questions such as: What material is required? How much labor will this really take? What welding processes are involved? Can this part be fabricated efficiently? Does this need to be machined after welding? Is the specified tolerance realistic? Are there outside processes required? What could cause this job to go over budget? What information does production need before the job starts? You should also be comfortable communicating those issues to customers, engineering, and production in a professional and solutions‑oriented manner.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications
  • Family health insurance coverage available
  • Paid time off
  • Paid holidays
  • Stable, long‑term employment with a growing manufacturing company
