Senior Project Manager – Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Remote – Covering a portfolio either in the Midwest or Northeast
Travel:
Up to 25% – 30% regional travel to project sites with once a month in the HQ
We are seeking a high-caliber Senior Project Manager to direct the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of stand-alone and hybrid utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
In this role, you will take full ownership of turnkey BESS project delivery, from enclosure integration to grid interconnection, ensuring exceptional construction quality, strict budget adherence, on-time COD, and world-class jobsite safety.
The successful Senior Project Manager will be responsible for:
- End-to-End BESS Project Execution: Lead and execute all phases of utility-scale storage projects from engineering handoff through commissioning, capacity testing, and handover. Maintain full accountability for site safety, quality, master scheduling, and environmental compliance.
- Storage Systems & Subcontractor Oversight: Oversee the installation and integration of battery enclosures/DC blocks, inverters/PCS, and balance-of-plant (BOP) systems. Oversee procurement, manage specialized electrical subcontracts, and rigorously review change orders, claims, and variance requests.
- Client & Interconnection Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for the Project Owner, Developer, and Independent Engineer (IE). Drive coordination with local utilities, RTOs/ISOs, and local AHJs to ensure seamless grid interconnection, station power setup, and site access.
- Financial Oversight & Cost Control: Manage detailed project cost models, earned value, and completion forecasts. Oversee project cash flow, approve subcontractor pay applications, and manage client milestone billings aligned with major equipment deliveries.
- Site & Construction Leadership: Direct on-site Construction Managers, General Superintendents, and Project Engineers. Enforce execution against the master schedule, drive recovery plans when needed, and mandate strict adherence to BESS safety protocols and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
The successful Senior Project Manager will posses:
- Experience: 5+ years of direct EPC construction management experience in the energy sector, with a proven track record of delivering utility-scale BESS or high-voltage energy storage builds.
- Role History: Prior experience acting as an EPC Project Manager, Prime Contractor PM, or Lead Construction Manager on utility-scale battery storage or hybrid power projects.
- Technical & Project Controls: Strong understanding of BESS hardware architecture, thermal management, and battery management systems (BMS). High proficiency in earned value management, subcontract management, and scheduling software (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project).
- Safety Culture: Deep commitment to a Zero-Harm site culture with expert knowledge of OSHA construction standards, NFPA 855 fire safety, and lithium-ion safety guidelines. OSHA 30 certification required.
- Leadership & Mobility: Exceptional leadership, negotiation, and field team management skills. Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel up to 25%–30% to project sites.
Preferred Qualifications for the Senior Project Manager:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline.
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification and/or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Direct design‑build experience with high-voltage (HV/EHV) substations, transformers, and utility interconnection infrastructure.
- Practical understanding of Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) compliance execution, including prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements on site.
